Windows XP hangs on Executing wlnotify.dll when shutting down
Hi, I have recently installed Windows XP on a Dell Inspiron 1520, I've installed all of the drivers (although I'm having a bit of a difficulty flashing the BIOS) and everything is running fine (with the exception of whatever power management software should be on the laptop), but for some reason whenever I try and shut the pc down, log off or reboot it hangs on Executing: wlnotify.dll for around 15/20 minutes before shutting down. I have extracted wlnotify.dll from the xp disc and copied it over to system32 using recovery console but I still have the same issue, I've had a quick check of the winlogon registry settings to see if i can see anything that would help me but I don't want to me messing around with it too much. I've also created a new user profile and I have the same problem with that profile. Does anyone have any ideas of what could be causing this?

Hello Geek. Here is one thing you might like to try.

User Profile Hive Cleanup Service

Use the tool to repair any registry unloading problems and reboot the computer. See if the problem still persists. Good Luck.

Hi, thanks for your help, I have installed and ran the application but unfortunately it has not helped, I've also ran a registry cleanup program and done additional virus and spyware checks, aswell as expanding the dll from another copy of windows. I can honestly say that I'm stumped. Do you have any more ideas before I reformat and start from scratch?

Hello Geek. Let us try to re-register the file and see if it helps or not.

So we are back to square one. I think it is a hardware problem if the above fixes were unable to resolve your problem.

1. Click Start.
2. Select Run....
3. Type services.msc in the Open: box and click OK.
4. In the corresponding Window, you will be presented with a list of services as shown below. Search for a service titled Event Log or something similar.



5. After you have located the service, right-click on it and select Properties.
6. In the Startup type: change the preference to Automatic. Click Apply and then OK.
7. Reboot the computer.

Try to shut down your computer and see if you still experience the problem or not. Good Luck.

Hi mate, yeah I'd tried that after reading a threat on another tech support forum where someone had disabled event viewer and this was causing problems with slow logon (once again executing wlnotify.dll). Unfortunately this did not work either, I have ended up reinstalling windows from scratch and putting all the drivers on again. The only things I did different the second time, as far as I can figure, are

1. installing all the drivers in a specific order, recommended on in a guide I found on the net to installing xp on an inspiron 1520
2. not disabling the 'system beep'

Glad to know you got it resolved. However, it is my belief that a complete reinstall should be adopted only when your situation is completely hopeless. Anyways, thank you for letting us know what worked for you.
