Question Drivers to run XP on Dell Vostro A860
Thanks for listening. This is my first question posted.

I have back-graded my new Dell A860 to XP (it came with Vista) and need to locate a driver package for audio, etc. My keyboard, mouse, and DVD drive seem to work fine, but I have no audio output for my Power DVD app. I also get an error message when I try to use my WMP. Most other functions seem fine, but I have only typed a few documents in Word and stored images from my flash drive.

I have tried installing the driver & utility disc from my XP package, but get an error message saying the install failed. I assume that I need drivers, but perhaps someone with more experience would be aware of other problems I am missing. I am quite the neophyte regarding this sort of thing.

Also, I do not have this computer online, so I am hoping to download the drivers to another computer and then transfer them over via my flash drive or external hard drive.

Many thanks for any time and consideration you can give to this matter!

Thanks!
Many thanks for your prompt response. I tried to load drivers from my disc again and windows prompted me to first uninstall the previous support files. Now that I've done that the keyboard and touchpad no longer work. I also seem to have disabled fonts since the install wizard dialogue now reads in mostly question marks. I probably will need to have this unit serviced by a professional at this point, although I would consider any advice you may have. I can still use my USB mouse, but the dialogue necessary to guide me through the install process is now completely illegible.

Again, thanks for your response.

Did that driver disc come with the PC or somewhere else?

I went to the 'add or remove programs' dialogue under control panel uninstalled the Dell Recource CD.

You said the PC came with Vista, so did you get install discs for Vista and a disc with Vista drivers?

Then did also get install discs for XP and a disc with XP drivers?

Yes, I received driver discs with XP and Vista. It was the XP driver disc I was trying to install when I uninstalled the Dell Resource CD as suggested by the dialogue box that popped up when I put the driver disc (XP) in the drive.

Try reinstalling the Dell Resource CD with the XP driver disc.

Just tried it. I read the order guide that comes on the disc which suggested installing OS, then processor drivers, then notebook, video, audio, etc. I seem to be making progress at the moment and have successfully installed several drivers as per the instructions in the order guide. I'll let you know about the results.

I really appreciate you taking the time to help a semi-literate computer newbie like myself. I've learned quite a bit from your suggestions.

Many thanks!

Bravo! My touchpad and keyboard are back. I still don't seem to have any audio and when I go to control panel/Sound devices, the dialogue says I don't have any sound devices installed. Correspondingly, the Media Player will not play any files, video or audio.

Go to Start > Run, type in devmgmt.msc and look to see if there are any yellow icons in there. If there are then you'll need to install the driver for that device.
