60 GB on my Hard Drive Missing
I am running Windows XP
I was recently throwing things from my external hard drive onto my computer when I recieved the message my disk space is low and I only have 7 GB left out of 111 GB

I decided to check things out because I was sure that was not right. When I right click on the C: Drive it says the 104 GB are being used but when I select everything inside of the C: Drive and right click properties, it says I am only using 38 GB

It should be known that about 2 months ago I did reinstall windows XP (home edition, and home edition 64 bit), I recieved two disks and gave one to my Father to upgrade his computer and I took the 64 bit and installed it on mine.

The one wierd thing I noticed is that some of my program files were there, and it created two program file folders (Program Files and Program Files x86). So thinking that was the main disk space hog I cleaned out the old program files but to no avail it only cleared up a gig or two.

Right-click RECYCLE BIN, click Properties, move the slider from 10% to 3%, then click Apply - OK.

Right-click MY COMPUTER, click Properties - System Restore, move the slider from 12% to 3%, then click apply - OK.

Go into C:\WINDOWS\Temp, then delete everything from inside the Temp folder.

Go into C:\Documents And Settings\(Username)\Local Settings\Temp, then delete everything from inside the Temp folder.

Empty the Recycle Bin, then restart.

How much hard drive space did you reclaim?

Suggest you get TreeSize here:
http://www.jam-software.com/freeware/index.shtml
It will show where your drive space is being used.
There is always a difference with what the drive reports in Properties and what you get selecting all folders, due to hidden system folders, such as System Restore (the System Volume Information folder).

Sounds like you installed 64bit on top of the original operating system. When you installed the 64bit, did you format the hdd, edit the partition sizes, or anything?

Well I had to do it from the boot up because my computer was locking down on me and was really screwed up, so when I did it I thought I deleted everything when I installed XP, frankly I think your right, and let me guess the only way to fix my computer is to wipe out my hard drive and start over again?

Not necessarily, but it might be the easiest. Other's may have better ideas, but if you choose to reinstall windows try the directions below (The directions were written assuming that you only have 1 hard drive in the computer and that you only want 1 partition), they were also made for 32bit, but that shouldn't make a difference.

Insert the XP CD into the computer and restart the computer

1.) As the computer restarts, If it says something like "press any key to boot from the cd" tap the [Enter] key on the keyboard until it says Setup is inspecting your hardware

When it gets to the partition screen
2.) Press the [D] key on the keyboard
3.) Press the [Enter] key on the keyboard to continue
4.) Press the [L] Key on the keyboard to delete the partition
a.) If it now only says "unpartitioned space," continue to step 5
b.) If there is another partition, press the down arrow on the keyboard once
c.) Press the [D] key on the keyboard
d.) Press the [L] key to delete the partition
5.) Press the [C] key to create a partition. Then press enter when it asks about the size (default max number should already be entered).
6.) Choose "Format the Partition using the NTFS file system" (probably highlighted)
7.) Press the [Enter] key on the board and the installation should begin
8.) This process will take a while to complete but is mainly automatic.
