my computer all of a sudden shut down, when i restart it, the screen with the safe mode options comes up but when i select any of the otions it just restarts and th screen with the safe mode options comes up again. so i tried to format the hard drive and reinstall xp but right before the partioniung option comes up the BSOD appears. the problem occured about a day after i added a slave hard drive, so i removed the hard drive an restarted the computer and reinstalled xp, but to no avail, can anyone help

If this is a desktop...take the Cmos battery out for about 10min and then replace it and restart the PC....

You might have to get into Bios to set the aHard drive your using as first in boot order

Really, a BSOD indicates hardware problems. Either bad drivers (corrupted) are installed or the hardware itself is damaged. If you aren't tech savvy I suggest taking it in to a local shop and having them troubleshoot it. One thing you can do, when the BSOD comes up, it gives an error code or message near the bottom, telling what is causing it. Get that info and post it here or into Google, there may be a simple fix. Look here, this is where the error code is: http://i270.photobucket.com/albums/j.../bsod-full.png

Yeah what Megabite suggests sounds like a good bet other than hardware. If your motherboard has a motherboard book, look how to reset the CMOS/BIOS. Most motherboards have 3 pins, 2 of them have something on them, to reset it, just switch it over so it plugs into the other set. (so if it is like this: o++ then make it like this: ++o then leave it for 5 min and put it back.)

Other motherboards have a button you hold for 10 seconds or so to reset CMOS. It is usually labeled.

After you reset your CMOS you will have to go into the BIOS setup and set the boot setting again. Look at the first screen to know how to get into the CMOS/BIOS settings, then go to the boot section and set (this is how I have it) Hard Drive as 1st boot device, CD as 2nd, and removable as 3rd.

I have the same problem with my dell after adding more memory, but when i get to that blue screen where it says the problem at the bottom it flashes so fast that there is no way to read or even copy it down.It isnt visible for more than a second, after watching repeatedly i can catch something about a file dump, which i havent a clue as to what that means.

Briatia, you should post in your own thread instead of hijacking someone else's thread. There is absolutely nothing to suggest that the solution for the original poster's problem is going to work for you or vice versa.

In any case, to get the computer to stop on the blue screen so that you can note down the information on it, do the following: Right-click on My Computer, choose properties, go to advanced tab and choose settings on "startup and recovery". Uncheck "automatically restart", and also choose "small memory dump" under write debugging information.

How are you supposed to do that when it can't even boot? The OP can't even boot his computer.

My post was addressed to Briatia, hence the appellation at the start of my post. One more reason why threads should never be used to address anything but the original poster's problems.
