Claymore, thanks for the help. I tried reinstalling Symantec, but that didn't help. I tried uninstalling again, but it crashed during the uninstall, which REALLY messed things up. We eventually manually uninstalled Symantec, which seems to have fixed the problem.

Glad you got it sorted. I'm no fan of Symantec/Norton. You can give it the final kiss of death with their removal tool which will remove all traces. It's a swine to uninstall and one of the only programs that's so difficult to remove that the manufacturer has to provide an additional uninstaller.

i hadn't installed anything new prior to my first crash

Once I started getting BSOD I reformatted, halfway through installing drivers it appeared again. i belive it was during my installation of my network card drivers the the first crash occured on the new setup.
