Hanging Computer mystery
Hi all

Last night I spent hours trying to sort someones computer.

It hangs for over 15 minutes on startup before starting to work normally. Initially msconfig was missing which was concerning. I downloaded this.

I ran spybot, cwshredder, avg and it found only minor items.

Diagnostic startup there was no problem so it has to be software specific.

I removed Norton (before installing avg) in case it was that but it isn't.

I removed SP3 but it still occurred.

I disabled all programs from starting up other than avg and zonealarm (installed this as well after deleting norton) - still the same issue.

I disabled all non microsoft processes from starting up (except anything relating to avg and zonealarm) but still the problem occurred.

I cannot understand how this can be happening or what can be causing it.

Any other things I could try before I wipe the whole thing?

Thanks in advance

Hi,
Is the version of Zonealarm you are using an Antivirus or a firewall?

Did you remove norton using the Symantec removal tool? If not, you can get it from here : http://Symantec.com/nrtexpired

What age is the machine and what are the system specifications?

Hi

Thanks for the comments

The zonealarm is the basic free zonealarm firewall and teh avg is basic avg antivirus. This issues was occurring with neither programs running but I had to put something on for basic protection.

Yes I used the symantic removal tool to get rid of Norton 360

The system isn't new but in no way under specced and has been working fine for years - over a 2ghz processor and 1gb RAM.

Does the system take 15 minutes to boot in safe mode? Are all the drivers installed OK?

You might want to get a moderator to look at this or to move it to the "Malware removal and HJT logs" forum. You can do this in the thread tools at the top of the post.
