Exclamation Windows XP
I recently got Windows XP Home Edition
since my friend gave it to me free and my computer was no longer working properly, i decided to install it.
When i did, the sound card wasnt working, no sound comes out,
And it won't connect to the internet.
Before i installed it, everything was working fine, i could listen to music but now i can't.
AND i can't surf the web.
What can i do?
My friend had told me to install my drivers, but problem is [don't know HOW]
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Your drivers are missing...

Do you have the CD that came with the system?

If NOT post the model no. here and we will help

Go to www.belarc.com. Download this free program and run it. It will tell you everything on and about your computer, then you can go to Compaq and d/l the needed drivers. If unable to get the drivers from Compaq, go to www.driverguide.com. Again free but you must register to use it. You should be able to find the necessary drivers there.
Since you are unable to get on line with subject computer save the drivers to floppy, cd or flash drive then run it on the computer.

This is the page you need then. Dowload the LAN driver - put it on a usb key drive or a cd-r and install it on system and this should restore your internet connectivity.

In order to do that,
the system NEEDS to be running on Windows Vista!
and mines is running on Windows XP Home Edition, BIG Difference.

That means you have to search the web for Windows XP drivers for each hardware component individually and hope the drivers exist and work. There's no guarantee. Not all computers that shipped with Vista have Windows XP drivers. Your best option is to reinstall the operating system that came with the computer.

If you decide to keep XP, you can try the driver files listed here:
http://forums11.itrc.hp.com/service/...readId=1285168

The audio driver they link is to an ftp site that needs password to access, but you can get it here:
http://www.download.com/WDM-R198-exe..._4-206304.html
The download page is slow to load - patience!

You started an earlier thread with "I recently bought a computer and it had Windows Vista Home Premium."

Putting together information from that thread, the one I closed and this one I think that your situation is ...

a. You bought a PC with Vista Home Premium,
b. You have no installation disk (this is, unfortunately, normal these days),
c. You tried a (probably illegal) install of XP but found that XP drivers were not supplied for your model.

Accurate summary?

Quoting from an HP site:

Quote:
Most HP and Compaq desktop PCs that ship with Windows Vista and XP do not come with recovery discs. Instead, they use a partition on the hard drive. Using a hard drive partition provides a convenient, more stable recovery solution. To access a hard drive recovery, turn on the computer and repeatedly press F10 (XP) or F11 (Vista) until a Recovery window opens.
If you have a Recovery partition your best course of action is to use it.

If you have no Recovery partition (you may have inadvertently wiped it out), your best bet is to order Recovery Cds/DVDs from HP. I'm not sure, but I think the price for them will be not much more than shipping and the cost of the disks.

Hi,

I would like to add that sometimes HP/Compaq cannot provide Recovery disk, after a time period like a year or two.... but they can still be purchased, same quality, they are official HP recovery sets...

at a place like THIS

Last set I bought, for XP Home, was $28.00 shipping included.
