Solved: Slow running computer/pages sticking......
I'm really getting frustrated! Maybe someone can help.......

Lately in the last week or so my computer has really slowed down. The pages are starting to freeze when i try to close them.......takes forever. I've been using the ATF cleaner on a regular basis to clean things out. Ran a resent defrag. I've now been just shutting down the computer and restarting......I heard that this helps and it seems to for a short while......takes about 20 mins until it starts slowing down and sticking again........I looked in the Windows Task Manager and noticed that the "usage" for Inexplorer is much higher than all other processes.......

I've learned all this fun stuff from searching around on the computer for help but now i seem stuck.........

Any ideas.......I'de sure appreciate it........

I'm going to give you a few things to do. Take your time and do them in the order listed.

---------------------------------------------------------------

Go here and download Norton Removal Tool 2009.0.5.26.

Run it and follow the directions in each window that appears.

Restart your computer after it's done.

----------------------------------------------------------------

Open these 2 Temp folders:

C:\WINDOWS\Temp

C:\Documents And Settings\(Username)\Local Settings\Temp

then delete all files and folders from inside these 2 Temp folders.

If a few files resist getting deleted, leave them alone and delete everything else.

It's all junk and it's a good place for a virus to hide.

Empty the Recycle Bin, then restart your computer.

------------------------------------------------------------------

Go here and download Sun Java Runtime Environment 1.6.0.12.

Save it and don't install it yet.

Go into Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel and uninstall all old versions of that java program.

Go into the C:\Program Files\Java folder and delete all leftover folders from inside the Java folder.

Restart your computer.

Install version 1.6.0.12.

-----------------------------------------------------------------

Click Start - Run, type in MSCONFIG, then click OK - "Startup" tab.

Remove the checkmark from all entries except:

AVG8_TRAY avgtray.exe

ctfmon ctfmon.exe

then click Apply - OK - Restart.

When the small SCU window appears on the desktop during restart, ignore the message. Place a checkmark in it, then click OK.

----------------------------------------------------------------

After all of the above has been done, post a new HijackThis log here.

----------------------------------------------------------------

I'm suspicious of this log entry:

O20 - Winlogon Notify: xatcore - xatcore.dll (file missing

but we'll deal with that later.

----------------------------------------------------------------

Run a HijackThis scan, put a checkmark in:

O16 - DPF: {CAFEEFAC-0015-0000-0006-ABCDEFFEDCBA} (Java Plug-in 1.5.0_06) -

O16 - DPF: {CAFEEFAC-0015-0000-0010-ABCDEFFEDCBA} (Java Plug-in 1.5.0_10)

then click "Fix Checked".

Run another scan and confirm those 2 entries are now gone.

--------------------------------------------------------------

I don't know why web pages are "sticking". It's possibly some of the Internet Explorer settings that you're using.

Is your computer running okay otherwise?

I fixed what you asked and those entries in the log are now removed.........I'll have to work on this thing like i was doing yesterday.....I actually have two windows (two different sites)open and have to transfer some info from one internet site to another.....sometimes this involves copying and pasting......i usually don't do much of that but it makes this particular work easier......maybe that has something to do with it.......

Otherwise, my computer runs fine.........just drives me out of my mind because i have to shut down and restart to get it up and moving faster again........closing down the windows is a pain too. Sometimes i try the ctrl-ult-det. trick and see that sometimes pages arent' responding......

Incidently this is geneology work and i noticed that your last name is one of the names i am working on!

Your computer specs shows a Compaq Presario. Is this the same computer? If so, what model number is it?

Is it a laptop or a desktop?

How much RAM is currently installed?

You have recently installed AVG??

Go to it's control panel and disable Link Scanning and see if that has any affect?

I have indeed installed AVG......last Friday i believe.......thought maybe if i got rid of Avast and got something different it might remove any bugs that Avast might have missed. No such luck.........Also got rid of Malware bytes and CCleaner.......

I've disabled the LINK scanner.......page downing still "jagged".......i need to work on what i was doing for a bit to see if the page's won't close right away.......i'll give it a try......

The software and support site for the Compaq Presario SR1123WM desktop is located here. I highly suggest that you add this site to your browser favorites list and keep it there for future reference.

---------------------------------------------------------------

According to the product specs site, that desktop comes with 256 MB of PC2700 RAM, but is capable of supporting up to 1024 MB. I highly suggest that you increase the RAM to that amount. 256 MB is way too RAM to run Windows XP and its associated programs. That's likely part of your problem.

You can purchase 2 - 512 MB modules for about $50.00 plus shipping from the Crucial site here. It's the most cost-effective performance boost that you can give that desktop. I've been buying RAM modules from that site for years.

Goodbye AVG
Just removed AVG.................now my computer works like a charm.......Sounds like other people are having the same probs. from the posts i just read......this is reasurring to me.....it's not all in my head after all......

.......now i have to find a different antivirus program to put on my pc. Do you think an AntiMalware program like the one i had would be enough?.......The one i had removed viruses that Avast missed.......
