Computer Freezes for 4-5 Minutes after startup
Hello all-

I have had this issue for several months. Everytime I boot or reboot my computer, startup occurs without any issues, but as soon as I attempt to do anything (open internet, open file folder, run program, etc), the PC freezes for several minutes before I am able to do anything. Once it goes through this "freeze cycle", I generally don't have any issues with the computer freezing thereafter, and am able to run whatever I want to do normally. This has caused me to leave my computer running for days before rebooting (I just leave the laptop closed when not in use). Any ideas on why this is occurring?

I run Windows XP, 1.4GHz, 504MB

Welcome to TSG.
If you can get into task manager(cntl/alt/delete)take a look at the high usage tasks.Generally idle task is well mover 90% which is cool.Other high users ned to be investigated.
That's where I would start.
What antivirus/antispyware apps do you have running.
Have you tried booting into safe mode?Same problem?

that's a very good suggestion......
is nikmasteed using AVG anti-virus ?
during those episodes of "Computer Freezes for 4-5 Minutes after startup" do you see the hdd activity light at the front of your box flashing rapidly ?

I run Symantec anti-virus daily.

Task Manager does not open until the freeze cycle has completed, and when I check that after the freeze it is between 97-99 on System Idle Process.

Rebooting in Safe Mode lets folders and internet browser (Mozilla) open immediately, but the internet doesnt seem to work (doesnt find web pages).

This morning when I tried rebooting it took near 10 minutes for this freeze cycle to complete.

Thanks for all the help thus far

I also run AdAware regularly (every 2-3 days) so there shouldnt be too much spyware on there

One other question, and I am just about tapped out of suggestions.
When this started to happen, can you remember what,if anything, changed on your pc.Added software/hardware etc.

Yes, and I'm sure now that you'll tell me that this is what caused it.

About a year ago I was in college and had been having many issues with this laptop, and my college's student IT service suggested and performed a reformat of the hard drive. The freezing did not start immediately after this, but it wasn't too long after (within a month or two). I never had a chance to take it back there and now no longer go there.

I just didn't know whether or not this was a problem you all have seen before and knew how to remedy. It's quite pesky.

Ok.About the only thing I can think of now is maybe move this to the HJT forum, providing them with an HJT log as outlined in that forum.Perhaps they can look at your log and isolate some apps that are running that could cause your problem.Without a snapshot of programs running,it is hard to determine the potential botleneck
The other thing you could try is,disable if possible your anti virus application so that it will not start over a restart.Would probably have to look in your startup tasks and system start tasks to make this happen.
What Operating system is this.
And as asked above,is the disc lite on pretty solid during this feeeze.

Oh and a couple of other things you could do,maybe all dead ends but perhaps worth the effort.

chkdsk /f and then a defrag.

Post the HJT log here. The forum should only be used in the event that Malware is discovered.

Download, install and run HiJackThis

Run the scan and save log file option
When the LOG file opens in Notepad, Edit > Select all, Edit > Copy

Then, in a reply post, Paste

This will allow us to review your Startup apps.

"O23 - Service: Symantec AntiVirus - Symantec Corporation - C:\Program Files\Symantec AntiVirus\Rtvscan.exe"

i don't know much about HJT logs so this is just a passing comment.......

Rtvscan.exe is Symantec's RealTimeVirusScan........i googled it.
http://www.experts-exchange.com/Appl..._20825921.html

i made the response in Post #3 'cause i have a very similar "problem" with my AVG anti-virus when i either start up or reboot, the PC *almost* freezes for more than 5 minutes when AVG's avgrsx.exe kicks in with a scan when landing into Desktop. PC is usable but very S L O W. so i just go out and put the coffee on and whistle Waltzing Matilda for 10 minutes. come back and everything is hunky dory

i've been told, one shouldn't disable these scan types.

with your 504Mb, adding more RAM may help (???)

anyone else ? ........

Norton AV & FW are serious memory hogs & slow down startup speeds. My speeds increased when i switched to Avast & Comodo Fw which rock any paid for service if you ask me.

Just a tip for computer freeze after 4-5 minutes after boot, Maybe your CPU or GPU are over heating? I had that problem a few yrs ago, I never dusted my system out & the more dust collected on your fan's the harder they have to work & less air they create to cool your stuff down & inevitably they just stop. Graphic's cards often give you warnings such as rebooting dosnt complete loading into windows. A CPU overheat your system just cuts off the power & everything stops as with the Hard Drive but you get more Blue screen of deaths that lockups with HD's

Whenever a computer stops after so long or reboots.. check to see if your CPU heatsink is to hot to touch strait after you shut down & if the back side of the Graphics card is very hot also. If yes, there to hot & overheating. Better be safe than sorry as a hardware failure costs you money, software costs you nothing but time..

Nik:
Please do not do anything until whitphil has a chance to analyze and get back to you.
As noted, these types of scan can take big resources, but wait for a complete analysis.
