CPU problem - distorted audio
Hi, i am having a problem with playing audio on my computer. Whenever i play any audio it is played slightly crackly with lots of beeping etc. I use Cubase SX3 and one day the CPU meter (in cubase) started going mental, flitting from nought to 90 percent etc. when i try and play a song, it plays it with a hell of a lot of beeping and lagging (sounds like a robot dying!). I am fairly certain that it is not a problem with cubase, as this is happening also with windows media player, just not as heavily (as in, it is almost bearable to listen to). I thought this might be to do with the CPU, but in task manager everything looks fine.

I am using Windows XP home edition

Please help, I need to use cubase for my work, and it is basically impossible to compose anything like this!

By the way, i'm no einstein when it comes to computers, and i wouldn't be surprised if this problem is a culmination of me trying to fix problems and just making them worse.

Thanks, Hugo

Look especially at item 6 in this list, but go ahead and answer all that seem relevant >>

0 > when did the problem seem to be begin?
1 > is it very slow to boot up?
2 > do programs open slowly?
3 > does the same behavior occur both on and off the internet. Or with no connection at all?
4 > does it matter how long the system has been on, and does a restart improve things?

Slow performance issues can often be due to overheating, so if the system is faster after it has been shutdown for a while and then restarted -- that would be especially suspect. To check for possible problems here, shutdown, open the case and blow out any accumulated dust. Then turn it
on and check to see that the fan is working. Sometimes it helps to physically clean the fan.

If a laptop, check to see that the vent is clear of dust and verify the fan is working. Temps and fan speed can usually be monitored with SpeedFan (except on Dell desktops), a free utility.

5 > if you do a ctrl-alt-del, do any processes show excess cpu usage, other than System Idle Process?

6 > If you open the Device Manager (run devmgmt.msc) and select the entry for IDE ATA/Atapi and select the Primary IDE > Advanced Settings, does it say the "current transfer mode" is Ultra DMA or PIO?

If it says PIO or even just DMA (rather than “ULTRA” DMA, first ensure "Use DMA if Available” is selected, then select the driver tab and uninstall the driver and reboot. Then check again.

*note that the above will not apply to RAID drive configurations.

Alternately you can run the script on this page >> http://winhlp.com/node/10

COMMIT CHARGE

Do ctrl-alt-del to open up the task manager. Select the "performance" tab. Let me know what you see under:

Physical Memory

Total: this is your total installed ram -- "physical" memory
Available: this is the amt of real "physical" memory presently uncommitted

Commit Charge

Total: this is the combination of total physical and virtual memory currently in use
Limit: this is the total physical and virtual memory available
Peak: this is the most you have had in use in this session

Hi, i can't get to my home computer until saturday, but i will try these things out as soon as i get home.

Just to update everything, i've done a system restore, and it worked for a bit, but i have a good hunch that it is something to do with RAM, because everytime i start a new project in cubase that has the same problem, but not the projects i already have. I have quite a library of samples (around 20GB) and I think this is the problem. Obviously i am not qualified to make this judgement, but what do you think? How can i improve my RAM? is this even a RAM related problem?

Anyway, i would appreciate an answer, but you could just wait until ive done the things in your post

However i can answer questions 0-4, so here it is:

0 - as i mentioned earlier, i think it began when i upgraded my sample library from 8GB to 20GB (these samples are all located in folders on the desktop btw, if that helps)
1 - Not really. it is fairly slow in comparison to most computers especially my vista laptop, but it always has been, since i bought it. (maybe its normal speed and i'm just impatient )
2 - Nope
3 - The computer in question isn't connected to the internet (i use my laptop for internet)
4 - Nope, neither of those things have any effect. every time i turn on/restart my computer it is the same problem

I will check out the device manager, commit charge stuff and let you know over the weekend

Thanks for all your help

It's not likely to be a problem with "bad" ram -- however it could be caused by insufficient memory available. So with the system "under load" you want to report on the resource usage as I suggested.

The IDE controller issue can be fixed by a "system restore" only to return if there is an underlying cause -- such as a bad disk drive. You may want to run chkdsk on it.

But try the "pio" fix first. There can be a possible workaround that might help keep the problem from returning.

I'm not sure what you are referring to as your "sample library". But the desktop is not a good place to store anything important.

Anything there would be lost to a "system restore". Files placed in "My Documents" are protected and not affected by System Restore.

Hi, i checked out everything you said and here are the results:

physical memory
total: 523244
available: 61250

commit charge
total: 417600
limit: 1279300
peak: 470036

also, i checked the pio thing, and everything was in order, it said ultra dma mode 5 and use dma if available etc

thanks

It looks like you are maxing out your 512 mb of installed ram and relying on the paging file.

This very definitely can affect system performance in the way you describe.

You may need more ram to do what you want to do.

In the meantime you might try simplifying your startups to conserve ram.

I could give some suggestions if you post a HijackThis scanlog >>

Download and install HijackThis. Run it and select "do a system scan and save the log file". Then copy/paste the contents of the log to a reply

http://www.trendsecure.com/portal/en...ols/hijackthis

------------------------------------------

Another thing that might be helpful is to open the Task Manager and select the processes tab when you encounter this problem.

Look at the columns labeled "mem ujsage" and "peak mem usage"; If you don't see them click the "View" tab and choose "select columns" and enable them.

Now look for those processes which are using the most memory in those two columns.

Might be a clue there as to what is using the most memory and what might be useful to disable.

The system is badly infected.

Post this same log in the Malware forum and hope that you can get some help there.

Also try running some scanners on your own.
