Window XP Start Up Issue
Ok, so my latest computer trouble is with Windows XP itself. When I try to start it up, the user profile screen is really strange, like the size of it is out of proportion and there is what seems to be a graphical error across the screen, like a white grid pattern (more like of a chain link fence), and I'm unable to any of the users, which then leads to THE "Blue Screen of death". But I can start it up in Safe Mode with the screen in the right size and everything working fine (well minus all the things that make a computer fun, you know, video card, ect.).

Now I've tried a few things already, such as system restore, MSCONFIG & reboot, and I am in the process of doing a 2nd virus scan as I type this.

Any help, solutions, or should I just consider backing up all important files and formating the harddrive to start over with a fresh clean slate?

Try reinstalling the graphics driver (or updating it). You really should try a few things to fix the problem before reinstalling just in case it turns out to be a hardware problem that will not be solved by reinstalling.

Actually I tried updating the graphic card drivers, but I have a Radeon HD 2400 Pro but the official site only had an update listed for PCIe and mines is an AGP, I wasn't aware there was that much of a difference, just how they connected you know...

Having a look at the ATI website (well, the AMD website, since they bought out ATI) turned up nothing for drivers here. You can Google for it easy enough, but finding a reputable site to get the drivers from is the tricky part.

One site I use when I'm in a pinch is Driver Guide (http://www.driverguide.com/). It is free to access, but you do need to register to be able to get the drivers. Paying for premium membership is unnecessary, all it does is cut the ads out.

Again, I do urge caution. You should be sure to scan any downloads with an up-to-date antivirus before installing them.

UPDATE!

So, after doing many searches around the internet looking for a solution. I did remember to try booting my computer up again to find out what was wrong again, and using the Event Viewer I came up with:

"Catalog Database (980) Error -1011 (0xfffffc0d) occurred while opening logfile C:\WINDOWS\system32\CatRoot2\edb.log.

For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp."

"svchost (980) An attempt to open the file "C:\WINDOWS\system32\CatRoot2\edb.log" for read only access failed with system error 1450 (0x000005aa): "Insufficient system resources exist to complete the requested service. ". The open file operation will fail with error -1011 (0xfffffc0d).

For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp."

"Windows cannot access the file C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\OEMBIOS.SIG for one of the following reasons: there is a problem with the network connection, the disk that the file is stored on, or the storage drivers installed on this computer; or the disk is missing. Windows closed the program OEMBIOS.SIG because of this error.

Program: OEMBIOS.SIG
File: C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\OEMBIOS.SIG

The error value is listed in the Additional Data section.
User Action
1. Open the file again. This situation might be a temporary problem that corrects itself when the program runs again.
2. If the file still cannot be accessed and
- It is on the network, your network administrator should "

Along with this I got the I/O Registry Error message too, I was wondering if there is a way to get this system back up and running properly again...

Go to Start > Run (or Search), and type:

cmd

At the prompt, turn off the cryptographic service:

net stop cryptsvc

Leave the command window open. Rename catroot2 to catroot2.old using Windows Explorer.

Restart the service:

net start cryptsvc

exit
