Dialup Modem Doesn't Work After Reformat. Please help.
I reformatted a Dell Optiplex GX110 with Windows XP Pro. Now I can can't get NetZero dialup to work. When I look in the Device Manager the is a big yellow questions mark by Other Devices > PCI Modem. It appears there is no driver for the modem. I have no idea what driver to download because I don't know what kind of modem it is. *sigh* I've been messing with it for 5 hours and have now started crying. I'm not joking, I really am crying. Any help would be much appreciated.

Dell doesn't have Windows XP drivers for that model computer. You could try the Windows 2000 drivers. I don't know which modem you have either, so you might need to try them all.

EDIT: You have a broadband Internet connection. Why are worried about a NetZero dial-up account?

I'll try that. Thanks. I'm working on the computer for a friend. I assured her I could make it run faster by reformatting it and now i've messed it all up. She uses dial up.

You could remove the modem and look for identification of some sort, manufacturer, model number, chipset, etc. Google anything you find.

narge:

I inherited an old Dell OptiPlex GX110 less than a month ago.

I replaced the original 10 GB hard drive with a 30 GB hard drive, formatted that hard drive, then did a fresh install of Windows XP Home Edition SP2.

It installed the drivers for every device in that desktop, including the dial-up modem, so there was no need for me to download and install drivers for it.

--------------------------------------------------------------

The dial-up modem in that desktop should be a Conexant HCF V.90 56K Data Fax Modem.

Here is the driver for it.

Version: 2.1.2.175.025

Great thanks. I installed XP Pro for whatever reason the modem driver didn't install. I've tried running the plug n' play option a number of times - but it didn't work.

Point the unknown item or modem entry in Device Manager to the folder where you extracted the drivers to.

Go to Device Manager, right-click on the modem, and select the option to install a driver. I don't have a system with an unknown hardware item, so I can't be more specific. You'll be prompted to browse to the driver. Browse to the folder where you extracted the driver files to.

You can always go to www.driverguide.com and probably get the needed driver.
The site is free, but you must register to d/l anything.
Also, d/l and run www.belarc.com. It is a small free program that will list everything on your comuter, including hardware/software, licenses key numbers etc. then get the neede driver.

The modem could have been replaced-- the end user needs to open the computer case and look at the modem, find a model number etc and ID it, then download the correct driver.

Another good way is to take a digital picture of the entire front side of the modem, of course out of it's slot and in good light and close up so that the ID can be read....

Post that picture as an attachment to a reply and you should have an ID in a short while.

Many of the utilities like Belarc Advisor, do not identify hardware items that are not completely installed....

Any help would be great appreciated.

I googled that part number.

It appears that modem is a PCTEL.

Here are a list of drivers from the VersionTracker site.
