Pc acting like in slow motion
I've had this problem for a week or so. I oppen up my pc and it works fine. After some time passes every time I try to perform any task recuiring a bit more processing power like a video or music from iTunes it acts like its in slow motion. The sound is like in slow motion and the video as well. My mouse also moves a bit strange. It's motion is not continuous. The whole thing is slow until I close one of the applications and refresh the desktop a couple of times.
At the begining I thought it's a HDD problem so I ran error-checking but nothing changed.
It's not because my pc is short of power. I have Windows Xp running on an Intel Core 2 Duo 3Ghz with 4GB of RAM.
Thanx in advance

Open up Task Manager (right click on the taskbar and then click Task Manager) and watch the CPU usage on the bottom of the window. If it is staying pretty high, then go to the Processes tab and watch to see if any of them are drawing a lot of CPU cycles. If this is the case note the name of the process and post it here. Don't try to fix anything yet!

Odd question, but during the slow down, does your mouse pointer blink?
What are you using for an anti-virus?

My CPU usage didn't go over 10% even when it froze.

abcdjzmcbt

It's not a laptop. It's got bits and pieces from various manufacturers. Just tell me what part you need info about and I will tell you.

ifranks

I am running Kaspersky 7.0.0.125 and Ad-Aware Free Anniversary Edition.
I scan quite regularly so it shouldn't be a virus

..Could it be my hard disk duying because it seems the problem appears only when I access it (music - video from my HDD)

During the next instance of slowness, open Word and click Edit > Paste.
What do you get?

Assuming the "big" data that is being processed is from a trusted source, try disabling both virus scanners that you have running,
and then access the "big" data that you need to process.
Does this help?
In general, virus scanners are a hoooge "resource hog" and may be causing delays by scanning and re-scanning "big" data.

Uh, sorry for all of the "quotes," eh?

After you try ifranks solution, if still no luck then you should test the hardware.
For the hard drive, visit the manufacturer's website and download the diagnostic tool.
For the memory, download memtest.

Btw would this happen to be a Seagate Barracuda 7200 drive? If so it may be affected by a recent firmware bug. To check, go here:
https://apps1.seagate.com/rms_af_srl_chk/

Also as Megabite said, does it happen in safemode?

OK
Here's what i've got:

_Yes, it happens it in Safe Mode
_MemTest said there is nothing wrong with the ram
_HDDHealth shows my HDD's health at 100% (The dignostic tool from Samsung didn't work)
_I couldn't paste anything in WordPad (I was in safe mode)
_Turning off Ad-Aware helps but why now? I had it for a long time with no problem at all.
_It's not a virus

What's wrong???????

May be worthwhile using a registry cleaner, this site rates the best available, I've found registry fix to be very good

Probably something installed after Ad-Aware was installed doesn't like "playing with" Ad-Aware. You could try un-installing likely culprits, but this may cause you headaches.
For now, I would look at either eliminating or using Ad-Aware sparingly.
Please reply if there is anything else.

If all else fails; you could doing a System Restore, back to a restore point before the problem began to occur? :P

Do not, under any circumstances, use a registry cleaner. They cause far more problems than they solve, and many of them are irreparable, but you don't know that as the damage may surface days or months down the road. This thread discusses registry cleaners: http://forums.techguy.org/all-other-...y-cleaner.html

-System Restore is good
-Reformat and reinstall is good
-Registry cleaners are bad

I'll see how removing Ad-aware goes long-term and if the problem remains I'll just go back to linux. That should fix the problem if it's not hardware-oriented

thanx for all the tips
