PC Won't Restore!
Please Help!!!

I have a Compaq Presario Desktop PC. It was playing up becoming slow and getting clogged up with things, so I started restoring it using the built in feature, it failed and came up with a blue screen and an error message. I turned it off an started to restore it using the CD's that I made. It can get up to the third disk and then the blue screen with the same error message will appear again. I have tried to restore it several times over the past couple of days. Sometimes the error message comes up on the first disc.

The two error messages are:

STOP: 0x000007F (0x0000000D, 0x00000000, 0x0000000, 0x0000000)

STOP: 0x00000026 (0x000401F4, 0xF8643F24, 0XF8643C24, 0X8043FD13)

Any help would be much appreciated.

The specs are:

Windows XP Home
Intel Pentium 4 2.8Ghz
512MB DDR Ram
120GB Hard Drive
DVD Re-Writer
Nvedia GForce FX 5200 Graphics Card

From thoses error messages I would make a guess you have a piece of bad hardware or the orginal hardware has been changed. Secondly a dirty DVD drive or restore disc could also cause your issues.

Any of them will stop a restore disc in their tracks. Check all the connections and clean the DVD lens and make sure the restore discs are clean.

If you had added additional hardware to the system remove it and run the restore disc again.

The 26 error indicates a problem with the CDFS file system. Either the CD is damaged or dirty, or its file system has been corrupted. There is probably no way to recover it.

But the 7F error may be a memory error, so I'd start testing there.

MemScope (Floppy and CD images.)
Roadkil's RAM Test
Microsoft Memory Test (floppy or CD ISO image)
Memtest86

If you have enough memory sticks, you can test them by removing one at a time and see if the problem disappears.

If you are running Vista, tap F8 on boot and choose the memory diagnostic, or if you can boot up, go to Start > Search and type:

mdsched.exe

Choose to run a memory diagnostic on next boot. Or, you can boot from the DVD and run it from there.

Hmmmmm none of the hardware has been changed in the system. I have tried cleaning the discs and it still happens.

No I make sure that all additional hardware is disconnected.

I have a CD/DVD Lens Cleaner thing (a CD with spikes on) I'm not sure if this will still work as it talks to you etc. I'm not sure if it would clean it enough.

Thanks I will try these out. Will they still work even though I have no system?

No I can't get to the system at all it just says:

NTLDR is missing
Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart.

I have copied my restore CD's and made a new copy and the 7F message is still coming up after the third disk goes into the drive.

I am now getting a 7E error message as well.

STOP: 0x0000007E (0xc00000005, 0x80427cfa, 0xf89a50c4, 0xf89a48c4)

You will find bootable tests among those memory tests.

If not memory, then the hard drive.

Free Hard Drive Testing Applications:
Manufacturer's Tests
Victoria for DOS
Victoria for Windows (Both versions of Victoria are among the best and most thorough tests available.)
HD Tune
CheckDisk 1.03 (Marks bad sectors as unusable.)
HDAT2 (Diagnostics and bad sector recovery)
MHDD Low-level Diagnostics
Bootable Hitachi Drive Fitness Test Floppy or CD Image (works on most drives)

Hard Drive Manufacturers' Diagnostic Utilities Links:
TachTech
BleepingComputer

How would I clean the inside of my PC and the RAM, without having to go and buy a can of compressed air???

Would a hoover be suitable with the brush attachment?

YIKES,
Do NOT use a vacuum to clean the inside of your computer. The static in the brush could zap your computer, and you may dislodge something other than dust with the suction.
Compressed air is the safest.

I've just tried restoring my PC yet again using the F10 button.

It asked for CD 5,4 and 3.

Then it came up Restoring files for XP or something like that, then I got a STOP: error message,

STOP: 0X00000050 (OXE1A60518, 0X00000000 0X8041BE46, 0X00000000)

I tried restoring it again via the F10 but it still came up the same.

Any more help would be grateful. I can't live without my Desktop.

Here is something I found when I googled the error message.
http://errornerds.com/error/?k=0x000...CFQRkswodbx2PA

Have you tried doing a system restore in Safe Mode? (tap the F8 key constantly while computer is booting) then try the choice, last good configuration)

F8 doesn't work as there's no operating system on the PC.

I have tried memory and hard drive tests and they are both ok.
