Solved: Error message "Running a DLL as an APP"
I got the above error message on booting up. I had this problem once before, about 6 months ago. I found a fix at that time, which is to rename rundll32.exe to some other name eg rundll32.old. The exe gets regenerated, and I never had that problem again. Until today, twice. The "fix" did nor work this time.

The only item which I've installed lately was Google's Browser, Chrome or whatever, and I don't know how to remove it. They refer to a string of code 0xc000000S which means nothing to me. Using XP home (recently reinstalled after reformatting. In spite of this bug, the computer continues working normally

Can anyone explain this to me and suggest what I can do to stop this message appearing. Even though it doesn't seem to do anything, it surely must be doing something! Or is it only informative?

Thanks in adance

Larry

to uninstall any software on a pc - go to the control panel - do you see the icon there about uninstalling softwares?

also, there was a malware that would do this - what anti-virus software are you running? - is it current? - have you did a scan RECENTLY?

edit:
you might try this:
Cannot find the Rundll32.exe file when you open Control Panel
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/812340

you also might download and run this program
TrendMicro HijackThis
http://www.trendsecure.com/portal/en...ols/hijackthis

then click on the button:
'do a system scan and save a logfile'

DO NOT CLICK ON FIXING ANYTHING WITH THE PROGRAM
[most of the info there-in is harmless]

save the logfile to your desktop - [or somewhere convenient to remember]
then COPY that logfile and paste it into a post here so that one of the forum's certified malware experts can take a look at it and give you some valid suggestions, and, if you DO have a virus, - [spyware, malware, whatever], help you clean it up

Thanks for replying.

1) I know rthe icon for uninstalling! Add/remove programs. I went up & down the list many times, but somehow chrome was not there.

2) I usually deep-scan the ccomputer every day. I use Bit Defender Internet securty 2009. auto-updates every hour.

3) Found rundll32.exe with no problem.

Thanks for your welcome suggestions & thoughts.

Hi Daniel_b2380

Just need to thank you SO much for helping and for the links. Seems it most likely was malware of a kind. First tme I scanned, nada, this time Bit Defender coughed up three cookies it regards as malicious. pointroll, doubleclick and mediaplex. And naive me thought all cookies were harmless. Sorry to havve taken this long to get back to you, I was away for a few days. Thanks again

larry,
you're welcome,
and thank you for returning to post your solution

Quote:
And naive me thought all cookies were harmless.
well, all i can say to that is, THEY WERE - but like most everything else, it has been abrogated - and what was true a number of years ago is NOT so today
cookies USED to just be 'coding' to help a browser open the web page quicker - a GOOD thing

i mean when you consider how innocent the web used to be - it was there for information - but today???? - a whole different story it seems with all the bad things that can happen on the web........messing up people's computers, stealing people's identities, stealing their bank accounts, it just goes on...........

piece of trivia for you: are you aware the simple act of downloading a picture from the net can also be downloading a malware - spyware - whatever onto your pc? it's true - the 'coding' can be embedded into the picture info used for displaying that picture and when you 'click' it to display the picture - you install the other also

another way of looking at this - SPYWARE - MALWARE - VIRII - they are also an application, a program, and they do just what they were written to do - just as any other aplication or program - it's just what may be a GOOD thing for YOU is a BAD thing for ME - especially if you are trying to get my bank account info - see what i am saying???

anyway, 'nuff of that - or i will have you as paranoid as i am

you do need to try to protect yourself as much as you can though
- only keep the cookies for the sites you trust
- don't allow 3rd party cookies [check your browser's settings]
- be careful when visiting a 'new' site and what you 'click' on there
- don't allow scripts to be run on ALL sites - [be 'selective' of who your friends are, as the saying goes]
note: if the site doesn't display properly without the scripts - is it a site you REALLY need to visit anyway? - just because they have a banner across the top telling me i have to enable scripts to view their 'flash' - did they also think maybe i DON'T want to see it? [especially for those still on dial-up? it 'steals' bandwidth and takes a lot longer to 'load' the site]
- be extremely careful of WHAT personal info you post on public sites
- be really leery of the so-called 'social-networking' sites and WHAT you post there
- use a good anti-virus and KEEP it updated
- use a couple of the anti- spy / malware scanners - [http://www.superantispyware.com/ & http://malwarebytes.org/] or others
- check this site - lot of info - although somewhat 'dated' - [http://www.spywarewarrior.com/] and this one; http://www.pcstats.com/articleview.cfm?articleID=1620

and just try to use common sense
