Solved: error with reinstall need XP SP1 CD
I am trying to do a repair install on an XP Pro system and everything goes ok until I get a message that says it needs the file asms on XP Service Pack 1 CD. I do not have a copy of that CD. I do have all the self install (exe) files for all service packs. I have tried to put in other CDs that do have the ASMS folder in i386 but the system will not accept those. Looks my only solution is to find a copy of the CD or learn how to extract and build a CD from the executable. I need help here or I will be stuck trying to reinstall from scratch and get this friends computer back to where it should be.

Hi!

You can use something like nLite to make a slipstreamed cd with SP1 (and tell your friend next time he should keep his PC updated)

1. Download and install nLite.
2. You'll need the XP cd, the service pack 1 executable and an empty cd
3. Follow the instruction on this guide (or google "slipstream nlite") and choose from a billion of other guides.
4. Once you've created an image, burn it to a cd and that's it.

If you need any help during the process, just ask.

thanks
Thanks, I will give this a shot, but that may not work in the middle of a repair install since most of the files and folders have already been copied. Maybe if I take the new cd (looks like that will be a slipstreamed CD) and copy that folder over to the hard drive while attached to another computer, I might be able to fake the install program out.

btw this computer was well maintained and had SP3 and all updates, but suffered a serious problem where it looked like the easiest solution was to do a repair install rather spend hours trying to figure out what files had been corrupted. Unfortunately the PC is aging and only had an original XP CD with no service packs on it. Wish me luck.

solved
Thanks outcaste. The information in the other thread got me going, although I had other errors crop up, but none of them fatal. The biggest issue from the other thread is that I had multiple lines with the same info in the registry. I reviewed them all and deleted all the referenced lines which allowed the installation to complete.
