Solved: System restore missing from system tools
XP Home SP2
System restore has disappeared from system tools. My CD Rom drive is not working, is there another way to get it back other than installing from the windows\inf file? When I try to do it that way, I am requested to insert my XP disc. Can't do it beacuse the drive is not working. I also tried the c prompt command:%systemroot%\system32\restui.exe but the command is not recognized. Any help appreciated. Also, I have run a complete virus scan and adware scan..nothing found..
more info: I can open and insert discs. They won't run...all i get is a flashing light. Will replace drive when able to...but for now I am wondering if there is another way to get system restore back.
Further, ANOTHER INTERESTING POINT: When I try to run the command %SystemRoot%\system32\restore\rstrui.exe I get the message that this command is not recognized. Also, I have double checked services and the system restore is started and on automatic. The registry also shows it as enabled. Any other suggestions greatly appreciated.

I believe you made a typo, but there is an "R" in rstrui in the command line you were trying....

1. Restart your system
2. When the system first boots, type F8 to bring up the boot menu
3. Select the Safe Mode with Command Prompt option
4. Log-on as administrator if needed
5. At your command prompt type %systemroot%\system32\restore\rstrui.exe
6. Hit Enter
6. This will open the system restore wizard…

There's another typo with the word restore missing....I know, you just mis-typed in that one and you did have the whole command correct in the other mention of the command.....are you sure you got it right when you were trying it? Were you using Safe Mode?

Did you try a file search for rstrui.exe ? If you find it double click it and see what happens.

Start>Search>All files and folders

rstrui.exe

Click Search

Try

Repair System Restore
Hidden files must be set to view them so
Go to Start
Control Panel
Folder Options
View tab
Under Advanced settings, place a check mark in: "Show hidden files and folders".
Next uncheck: "Hide extensions for known file types".
Click Apply
Click OK to exit.
Open Windows Explorer
Go to Windows folder
Open inf folder.
Find a file named: sr.inf
Right click this file and select "Install" from the dropdown menu.
Note: All restore points will be deleted once the repair has finished.
Reboot the system

steve20491, What was the location of the rstrui.exe file(s) that you found? The correct location where it belongs is C:\Windows\system32\Restore.

If it's not in that location copy and paste a copy into that folder.

You can also try the possible fix that Byteman posted.

system restore missing
I think that the problem is somewhere in Services. I checked the system restore service and found that it, and several other services were disabled, for some reason. I reset all that I think are necessary, including system restore, but still have the problem of a missing suystem restore tab in system tools. Does anyone know what services system resore depends on to operate correctly? I think I am just missing one that needs to be started.
Also, I checked and found the sytem restore file in the right place. However, in the system 32 folder there is a sr file but no sr.inf. The sr allows me to select install, but does nothing.
