OK thats installed, I started a game and mIRC along with a browser, which is generally enough to crash me, and CPU usage is now hovering around 20% until I bring the game to forefront then its about 70%...

I am not on xp right now but I think you go to control panel----display---then one of the tabs on the right...the same one that takes you to resolution then down lower you will see an advance button you can click.
You may have an icon in the task bar you can click on as well
Also if you go to task mgr there will be some ati processes running

OK yea I can get there. It did crash, but it lasted a lot longer than it normally would have, and it did not crash the same way as usual. This time, it just shut itself down and didn't attempt to reload.

you have the drivers then if you can get to the advanced settings
no we just have to figure out if its a video or cpu overheat.
i still thinks its cpu because the scanner shut it down.
although your heat tube fins make be clean your heat tube can be going bad.
It has a minute amount of liquid refrigerant in it..some of it can leak out or the inside of the heat tube wicking material breaks down.
Do you have spybot? that will tax your cpu pretty good to test it.
