Connecting modem reboots PC
Hello,

I've tried using the search function but could not find anything related to my specific problem.

When I connect my Alcatel 330 speedtouch modem to my PC it reboots. When I then try to start the PC I am unable to start windows XP (it just hangs). After many experiments I found that if I disconnect my modem (connected via UCB) then XP boots no problem.

I have done a full windows re-install but the problem stil persists.

In the BSOD I am given the following error:

DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL

STOP: 0X000000D1 (0X00000000, 0X00000005, 0X00000001, 0XF74C2C19)

atapi.sys - Address F84C6C85 base at F84C10000, DateStamp 41107b4d.

Has anyone experienced this before?

Any ideas?

Many thanks

Hi!

Well, when you plug your modem in, windows should install drivers for it (or at least attempt to). So as in many cases, this is probably a driver issue.

Do you have SP3 installed? Please update if you don't.
Did you get a cd with drivers when you bought your modem?

Go to Control panel>system>hardware>device manager. Are there any yellow question/exclamation-marks anywhere?

I should've added that my PC has been working for 4 years using this modem with no apparent problems.

One issue I have is since I am unable to connect to the net (my PC reboots before I have the chance) I cannot download windows updates. Quite an issue bearing in mind my winsows XP disk is also 4 years old.

In any case I downloaded SP2 and SP3 from the Windows support site
(via a secondary PC) and now have windows SP3 installed.

I install the drivers for the Alcatel 330 modem from a CD that came with my internet package. Up until now I've had no issues with the driver installation.

When I go to Control panel>system>hardware>device manager there are question marks at the following items:

Multimedia Audio Controller
RAID controller
Universal Serial Bus Controller

These are all in the "Other devices" section.

Thanks for your assistance!

It would help a lot to know what kind of PC we're dealing with here. Is it prebuilt (then it has a model number on a sticker somwhere pn the case - something like "Dell Dimension 4600c").

Or did you build it by yourself (selecting components)?
Have you tried plugging it to a different USB hub?

It was built by a friend of mine. Specs I do know are:

AMD AThlon XP 3200 2.20 GHz
2.00 Gb of RAM
120 GB hard disk
BIOS type AMI (07/29/04) (Could probably do with updating the BIOS but not sure how to do that).

Yes I have tried connecting the modem to a different USB hub but not joy.

What other info would be useful to know?

Isn't there anybody who can help me?

I know it's a fairly unusual problem!

Thanks

Sorry, I thought I had posted a response, but I must have misclicked or something - I wanted to know which motherboard you had. Because my suggestion is to first install (reinstall) the chipset drivers.

"Universal Serial Bus Controller" - right click this item, select uninstall (in device manager). Restart. Go back to dm and see if the entry is still there with a yellow qm.

I uninstalled universial serial bus controller and then re-installed it. Now there is no question mark beside it. So success on that front!

I downloaded Aida32 software to find out details about my motherboard.

It's an AMI type but it has beside "Motherboard Name" it has "unknown"

In the chipset submenu there are no details.

Is it easy to re-install the chipset drivers?

Downloaded CPU-Z

In the mainboard tab my motherboard model is given as KTV88
Chipset : VIA KT880
Southbridge: VIA VT8237

Just to provide more info. When I restarts my PC and connect my modem windows now always says new hardware found. Then the PC restrtas itself. At the restarts I'm told a serious error has occured. I look at the log details and am told the following:

BCCode : 1000007f BCP1 : 00000008 BCP2 : 80042000 BCP3 : 00000000
BCP4 : 00000000 OSVer : 5_1_2600 SP : 2_0 Product : 256_1

Yes, very easy, just like installing anything else.

Here are the correct drivers. Download them, unzip the file and run setup.exe. After it's done you'll have to restart. That's it for the chipset drivers. After the restart, go to dm and see if there are any more yellow question marks.

Hello again Zabusant.

Downloaded the updated chipset drivers but it has not made a difference.

I was thinking ther eis something physically wroong with the bus on my motherboard but then any devices connected to my USB ports would not work. As it is only the modem is displaying any issues.

in device manager I now have yellow question marks beside 2 items:

1.Multimedia Audio Controller
2.RAID controller

Any other ideas?

Well, I thought the chipset update would fix those two, but now just go ahead and right click>uninstall them and restart.

There might be a driver conflict causing your problems. Try booting to safe mode (F8) and plugging the modem in.
