Right off the bat I can tell you have too much running their for 1/2 gig of ram. You need atleast twice that for smooth sailing.

But to cover all the bases, can you answer these questions >>

PERFORMANCE QUESTIONS:

0 > when did the problem seem to be begin?
1 > is it very slow to boot up?
2 > do programs open slowly?
3 > does the same behavior occur both on and off the internet. Or with no connection at all?
4 > does it matter how long the system has been on, and does a restart improve things?

Slow performance issues can often be due to overheating, so if the system is faster after it has been shutdown for a while and then restarted -- that would be especially suspect. To check for possible problems here, shutdown, open the case and blow out any accumulated dust. Then turn it
on and check to see that the fan is working. Sometimes it helps to physically clean the fan.

If a laptop, check to see that the vent is clear of dust and verify the fan is working. Temps and fan speed can usually be monitored with SpeedFan (except on Dell desktops), a free utility.

5 > if you do a ctrl-alt-del, do any processes show excess cpu usage, other than System Idle Process?

6 > If you open the Device Manager (run devmgmt.msc) and select the entry for IDE ATA/Atapi and select the Primary IDE > Advanced Settings, does it say the "current transfer mode" is Ultra DMA or PIO?

If it says PIO or even just DMA (rather than “ULTRA” DMA, first ensure "Use DMA if Available” is selected, then select the driver tab and uninstall the driver and reboot. Then check again.

COMMIT CHARGE

Do ctrl-alt-del to open up the task manager. Select the "performance" tab. Let me know what you see under:

Physical Memory

Total: this is your total installed ram -- "physical" memory
Available: this is the amt of real "physical" memory presently uncommitted

Commit Charge

Total: this is the combination of total physical and virtual memory currently in use
Limit: this is the total physical and virtual memory available
Peak: this is the most you have had in use in this session

Also, let me know how much of an improvement there is in a completely "Clean Boot"; this is not a fix, just a test. If there is a lot of improvement you need to radically cut down what is under the "startup" tab. This includes media players, office programs, updaters, Adobe -- just about anything not absolutely needed at startup for Security purposes.

Run msconfig and select the "Services" tab. Check "Hide Microsoft Services" and then disable the rest. Also uncheck "load startup group" on the general page.

Now restart and test the issue at hand

If no problems, run msconfig and recheck half the disabled items on the Services tab. Test again. If the problem recurs, UNcheck half the items you just checked to narrow down the culprit.

If the problem didn't occur, check the other half, so all the Services are enabled -- proceed to do this on the startup tab as well.

Get the idea? You want to isolate the problem to a specific startup if possible.

Note: if you already have items unchecked under msconfig > startups and are in “selective” startup mode – you should note what these are before beginning. They will need to be de-selected again.

Also, you should not see two separate instances of IE in your task Window. This is caused by opening a second instance of the entire browser when all you really want is a new tab or Window running out of just 1 instance of Internet Explorer. Open a new tab or a new window -- not a new shortcut.

Your computer is showing 448 MB of RAM because the on-board graphics controller is using the other 64 MB. You need to add at least another 512 MB, and preferably more if your computer supports it.

Uninstall Windows Defender(which does a poor job) and stick with Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and SUPERAntiSpyware. Those 2 will do just fine for your antispyware arsenal. Make sure to run their update function and get them up-to-date before doing a scan with them.

There are way too many programs loading during startup and running in the background that don't need to be doing so. Some programs don't need to load and run at all, and other programs can be started manually when needed.

Click Start - Run, type in MSCONFIG and then click OK - "Startup" tab.

Remove the checkmark in:

TkBellExe C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe

(To disable it permanently so it doesn't keep rechecking itself, start RealOnePlayer, click Tools - Preferences, go to Automatic services in the Categories pane, uncheck all options, then click OK)

SunJavaUpdateSched C:\Program Files\Java\jre6\bin\jusched.exe

RemoteControl C:\Program Files\CyberLink\PowerDVD\PDVDServ.exe

(This entry is needed only if you're using a remote control to watch DVD movies in your computer)

Java Quick Starter

lxdc_device

PrismXL

Yahoo! Updater

Change the setting from Automatic(if currently set there) to Manual, then click Apply - OK.

Repeat the steps with the next entry.

After you're done, close the window and restart your computer.

When the small System Configuration Utility window(see screenshot) appears on the desktop, ignore the message. Put a checkmark in that window, then click OK.

Run a new HijackThis scan, then post that new log here.

You might consider also unchecking the IncrediMail startup entry and then manually starting it when you're ready to send or receive Email.

It's known to cause freezes and crashes in some computers, depending which version you're using.
