I've recently acquired a Dell Inspiron 640m, I know its not great, but it's free and will get me by. Anyways, it had Vista Home Basic on it previously. I uninstalled Vista, formatting everything . There were 4 partitions, 2 FAT, 2 NTFS. I deleted them and installed XP. It was going soundly until i was attempting to create a wireless network connection with the 'Main' computer; right at the end. I tried for a couple of hours and still didn't work, i got my dad involved (he is normally good with these problems) and he had no clue.
My guess is that the wireless is not working. Or i haven't installed all the components.
Has anyone had these problems? And were you able to fix it? and How?
Also if you know how to fix it, could you please share the knowledge?
Cheers.
PS. i'm sorry if this message wasn't ledgible, im very frustrated. | | Distinguished Member with 3,262 posts. | | Join Date: Jul 2006 Location: Central Florida (Polk County) Experience: More | | Did you install XP drivers for your wireless card? | | Junior Member with 8 posts. | | Join Date: Jul 2009 Experience: Intermediate | | I went to Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs > Add/Remove Windows Components
and i selected....
accessories and utilities
indexing services
internet explorer
management and monitoring tools
networking services
other network file and print services
outlook express
update root certificates
windows media player
windows messenger
which means the unselected are...
fax services
internet information services (IIS)
message queuing
I think this is what you mean. If not, how would i be able to install XP drivers.
If i remember correctly i created a network connection before i installed some of the windows components, maybe this may of done something.

Might want to take a look at device manager entries for network adapters and any other device that shows an error indicator.
Let’s take a look at the status of the network adapters
Device manager:
Hold the Windows key and press R, then type devmgmt.msc
Please respond to all the following steps.
1. Under Network adapters, please tell me all the devices listed.
2. Are there any devices under Network adapters that have a red x displayed?
3. Also, are there any devices anywhere in the Device Manager display with yellow ? or ! displayed?
4. Adapter status should be “working properly and enabled”
Might also be a good idea to download and install the chipset driver as well.

I would go to the Dell site and:
Download and install the chipset driver. Then
You need to investigate all the devices that indicate errors.
You will probably have to download and install drivers for them all. | | Junior Member with 8 posts. | | Join Date: Jul 2009 Experience: Intermediate | | thats great.
thank you very much for your help.
i will report back to here if the errors arent rectified when i install them all.
