Solved: Can't get my wireless card to work
I have a Dell laptop. It had a program in it, Intel something, to find and connect to wireless signals. It never found my signal and always had an error. I tried to just click on the little double computer to look for networks and it wouldn't let me use that because of the Intel program so I uninstalled the Intel. Now I still can't find signals by clicking on the little double computers. It only shows me Local Area Connection. Is there a setting I need to change? Or something I need to install? It's a Dell Latitude D610

Hi,

Could it have been a Intel Pro 2200 wireless? I think you will need to re install the driver. I am not sure why your previous install didn't work and had errors. At a guess I am thinking that there was a problem with connecting to the ISP or a security issue.

I use wireless and have had similar problems ( I use a pc not a lappy tho) - sometimes I have been able to solve the connectivity problem by clicking the box that lets windows choose what setting is best for my pc.

It might be worth a look to see what hardware you have installed in device manager. or to see if its working.

(I am a beginner so if what I have said isn't relevant - just ignore me)

I also don't know a lot about laptops.

TC

under Network Adapters in Device Manager it says Broadcom NetXtreme 57xx Gigabit Controller. I tried updating that driver but said wizard could not find a bettermatch for your hardware. Also tried reinstallind new hardware and it said can't install because it can't find the necessary software. I guess I really screwed up by uninstalling this program but I had never seen it before. We always just clicked on the double computer and found the signals that way.

What operating system are we dealing with here ?
What wireless manager are you using ?
Take a look at:
Start/run type in services.msc

Take a look at wireless zero config. If there, what is it's status ?
Analyzing the adapters is a good suggestion also. Like so:

Let’s take a look at the status of the network adapters

Device manager:

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type devmgmt.msc

Please respond to all the following steps.
1. Under Network adapters, please tell me all the devices listed.
2. Are there any devices under Network adapters that have a red x displayed?
3. Also, are there any devices anywhere in the Device Manager display with yellow ? or ! displayed?
4. Adapter status should be “working properly and enabled”

Also look for any other devices that show error indicators.
We might have to do some in depth analysis but let's start with the above basics.

I don't understand what wireless manager... I have a linksys wireless g router. I have no trouble connecting my sons laptop. The laptop in question is a friends. She was having trouble and brought it to me to figure out...I of course know nothing but do know how to use these tech sites and follow directions.

The wireless Zero config status is Started

1. Under Network Adapters is...Broadcom NetXtreme 57xx Gigabit Controller
2. no red x's
3. Yellow ? on Other devices and yellow ?! in that says network controller
4. When I click on the network adapter, Broadcom, it says working properly

That's all I see in device manager...no red x's and no other yellow ?'s

OK:
"3. Yellow ? on Other devices and yellow ?! in that says network controller"
What is the error here ?
Let's get some network environment from the failing pc.

From a Johnwill post on the Networking Forum

Try these simple tests.

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD (COMMAND for W98/WME) to open a command prompt:

In the command prompt window that opens, type type the following commands one at a time, followed by the Enter key:

IPCONFIG /ALL

PING <computer_IP_address> For addresses,follow instructions below….

PING <default_gateway_address>

PING <dns_servers>

PING 206.190.60.37

PING www.yahoo.com
Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter to copy the contents to the clipboard.
Paste the results in a message here.

<computer_IP_address> - The IP Address of your computer, obtained from the IPCONFIG command above. IPV4 for Vista

<default_gateway_address> - The IP address of the Default Gateway, obtained from the IPCONFIG command above.

<dns_servers> - The IP address of the first (or only) address for DNS Servers, obtained from the IPCONFIG command above.

If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.

To clarify ping addresses..

"computer_IP_address> - The IP Address of your computer, obtained from the IPCONFIG command above. IPV4 for Vista

<default_gateway_address> - The IP address of the Default Gateway, obtained from the IPCONFIG command above.

<dns_servers> - The IP address of the first (or only) address for DNS Servers, obtained from the IPCONFIG command above."

And while we are diagnosing, let's check the following services..

Check your Services are Started on all PCs:
• COM+ Event System (for WZC issues)
• Computer Browser
• DHCP Client
• DNS Client
• Network Connections
• Network Location Awareness
• Remote Procedure Call (RPC)
• Server
• TCP/IP Netbios helper
• Wireless Zero Configuration (XP wireless configurations)
• WLAN AutoConfig (Vista wireless configurations)
• Workstation

Note: You can check the services in Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Services.

All of these services should be started, and their startup type should be automatic (or perhaps manual).

If a service is not running, open it's properties and check the dependencies. Check each of the dependencies and see which one is preventing the service from running. Checking the event log is also a good idea here, there may be clues to what is failing

Under computer browser, dependencies are Server and Workstation.

Under remote procedure call the depends on Workstation

Your ipconfig does not show any wireless adapter.Only a lan connection, which shows on your ipconfig.
So,give me all the details of:

""3. Yellow ? on Other devices and yellow ?! in that says network controller"
What is the error here ?"
No wireless adapter,no wireless.

Also, make and model of modem and router??

"Under computer browser, dependencies are Server and Workstation.

Under remote procedure call the depends on Workstation"

Activate both of them.

And let's see why we don't see a network adapter.
And I really feel stupid asking this question, but, are you sure that the wireless adapter switch is powered on ?

I think what I uninstalled in the beginning which had the error was the wireless program? maybe.

When I started the Computer browser I got an error "The Computer Browser service on Local Computer started and then stopped. Some services stop automatically if they have no work to do, for example, the Performance Logs and Alerts service"

It's a friends laptop. When she brought it to me she said she had some sort of virus that was preventing her from getting online. Could a virus have taken away the wireless adapter?
