 | Member with 40 posts. | | Join Date: Jul 2009 Experience: A little over average | | Why is my computer blocking random files? I keep getting restriction notices by my computer for random files. It started with HyperCam 2. Then went on to FortressMU. Task manager and registry editor were blocked after that. I searched the problem and couldn't find a solution so I thought it was a virus. I did a complete scan of my computer and found 12 items which I then quarantined. I restarted my computer, deleted the quarantined items, then noticed whatever it was, it had now blocked my Hamachi application. What could be the problem?
<EDIT 1:38pm 6/7/09>
The error message is: "Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file. You may not have appropriate permissions to access the item."
<update 1:25pm 6/7/09>
Whatever it is, it took over my Google talk, windows live messenger, and I think, nvidia control panel.

If you truly had 12 viruses, chances are that parts of them remain. Antivirus software is rarely able to remove / clean up everything. Really the only thing AV software is good for is alerting you to the problem. This being a case, your only true option is to reinstall the operating system.
Once this is done, install all important and critical operating system updates IMMEDIATELY. Next install antivirus software and perform all updates. Very important.
I know this is a difficult step. But it emphasises the need for repsonsible computer habits. | | Senior Member with 120 posts. | | Join Date: Jun 2009 Location: England Experience: Always learning =] | | I'll just post my reply from the previous thread.
If its infact a virus you should scan do a full system scan in safe mode preferably using malwarebytes's (updated). It is likely a virus due to task manager being block.
I suggest you scan before you do anything else.
FYI, Malwarebytes' Antimalware is a program used to detect/remove viruses. | | Senior Member with 272 posts. | | Join Date: Oct 2008 Location: York, UK Experience: Intermediate | | I recomend clicking on report in the bottom left of your post and requesting that you post be moved to the malware removal forum. It may take a little while for a response so please read the IMPORTANT topics at the top of the malware removal forum and post a HJT log to assist the helpers.

I will get the HiJackThis log as soon as possible.
And, sludge3000: Waaaaaaaaat? I don't get what you are saying.

Virusus are meant to hide -- then yes, you should reinstall. Viruses are designed to hide. They imbed themselves in such ways that it is all but impossible to find and remove everything. If I was you, I would reinstall. (Back up irreplaceable files first, though!!!)
But first, what were these 12 items? Were they declared as viruses? Or something simple like cookies?
Do you have appropriate permissions? What account type are you logged in as? | | Member with 40 posts. | | Join Date: Jul 2009 Experience: A little over average | | I do have them. They were accessible for like months. Just out of no where did they start cutting me off. I am logged in as the only administrator account on my computer. One person, one administrator, one account. I run an XP Pro Edition E-Machines W3050 80gb model 512mb RAM ATI (I think) single processor *takes a breath* Desktop.

I got these results from a complete scan done by SUPER Anti-Spyware. | | Senior Member with 272 posts. | | Join Date: Oct 2008 Location: York, UK Experience: Intermediate | | Quote:

#10 | You should scan your computer in safe mode with malwarebytes' antimalware and see if the virus still exist when you boot your computer up.
As it can control your computer if it likely to be caused by malwares.
If it gets worse even when you've scanned your computer you should re-install windows as suggested above. | | Member with 40 posts. | | Join Date: Jul 2009 Experience: A little over average |

#11 | sorry about the delay,
the funny thing is that when i tried to boot me computer into safe mode, it would lode the drivers and stuff (you know, the screen when it loads everything) and it would stop after like 1.5s and restart the computer. I tried several times, i tried different safe modes, i tried running my computer normally, best config., and what drives to run first.... nothing worked so i was forced to boot my computer without having any back up.
overall, i did a clean reboot, full format, and re-installed windows!

Glad to see you did a reinstall. Yeah, its a hassle. But it is likely the best -- and only -- solution. Be sure to install all Windows updates, a firewall (Windows' Firewall is good), and an updated antivirus scanner. Very important! | THIS THREAD HAS EXPIRED.
