Solved: Occasional BSOD on start-up
Yesterday I started getting BSOD's on start-up. The only problem is, it just flashes up on the screen and then the computer restarts. I get through post and get to the loading windows xp screen and then that where it goes pear shaped.

But after a few times, windows will start up normally and everything is ok. But the point is there is a problem somewhere, but I can't see what the BSOD says so I'm in the dark really.

System Specs

XP SP3
Asus P5B
Q6600
3GB Geil ram (4 GB installed)
XFX 7600GT
M-Audio 1010LT
Samsung 750GB (OS)
Samsung 1TB (Data)
Hiper Type-R 580W PSU

Any help would be very much appreciated, cheers

EDIT:
Yesterday all I changed on the pc was the tcpip limit, using a program off the net. I have updated GPU drivers, and also installed speedfan to check temperatures. Is 63c for the GPU a normal temp or overheating?

Do you have any "System Restore" points that predate the problem? These tend to resolve most "non hardware" errors.

63 may or may not be too hot depending on the processor type. I don't think it is for that chipset.

If you can manage a boot either in Normal or Safe Mode, upload the minidumps >>

I can run a debugging utility on the dump files if you do this:

1 > create a new folder on the desktop and call it "dumpcheck" or whatever you like
2 > navigate to c:\windows\minidump and copy the last few minidump files to that folder. *this assumes 'c' is your boot drive, if it is not, subsitute accordingly
3 > close the folder and right click on it and select Send to Compressed (zipped) Folder.
4 > use the "manage attachments" in the "advanced" reply window to upload that zip file here as an attachment.

This might point us to a non Microsoft driver causing the error, if one exists for it.

If you do not see any minidumps, be sure you are not using any cache cleaner such as CCleaner. Also run sysdm.cpl and select Advanced > Startup and Recovery. Make sure "small memory dump" is the one chosen under "write debugging information" and the location should be %systemroot%\minidump

I do use ccleaner but haven't run it for well over a week, and I cannot find any minidump folder.

I think I have found the problem after some help in another topic, the BSOD says: unmountable_boot_volume

I haven't made any hardware changes for at least 4 weeks, the only things I remember installing/updating in the last couple of days is comodo firewall update, NOD32 Anti Virus update & increasing the tcpip limit. I updated my graphics card after I started getting this problem as I thought it was the GPU that was causing the problem.

It took me 15 attempts to boot up the computer tonight, but now its on and working fine. (I'm using it to post this.) Is it a straight forward fix or is it a windows reload job?

Massive thanks for all the help so far

%systemroot%\minidump is C:\WINDOWS\Minidump.

I have managed to fix the problem from reading another thread here (in case anyone finds this searching for help aswell) http://forums.techguy.org/windows-nt...ot-vulume.html

Check disk worked a treat

Okedokey, yes that is the recommended "fix" for that error -- doesn't always work though

I would keep monitoring the event viewer system log for any evidence of ongoing disk corruption >> http://support.microsoft.com/kb/244780

I also would configure Ccleaner, if you are going to use it, not to delete minidump caches.
