Unhappy CD Read Error Occured, Blue Screen of Death during Reinstall of Windows.. HELP!!
I was given a laptop as a gift three days ago. A family member bought the laptop from an eldrly friend who had a laptop they barely even knew how to use. It's a Compaq 2200 Presario.. I don't know much about it besides that it's like 4 years old..

I immediately installed Defender Pro 2009 virus protection and scanned the computer. It found 21 infected files, but deleted them all. The computer was running great. I uninstalled programs I didn't need and installed AIM, Google Chrome, and Windows Blinds.

After being on facebook for like two hours, the computer randomly went to a blue screen. It stated that something was wrong with some file (I wasn't smart enough to record it down, sorry) and that I should restart in safe mode. I restarted and I got the Compaq Screen and the black screen with the underscore.. then another black screen that read:
"Disc Read Error Occurred. Ctl + alt +delete to restart." I have tried dozens of times to restart and it does the same thing.

I am now on a friends computer. I googled it and found that the only option was to reinstall windows XP.

I Just tried and after formatting my C:// drive 1% this blue screen popped up:

It said it shut down to protect my computer because of this error -
DRIVER_UNLOAD_WITHOUT_CANCELLING_OPERATIONS

told me the same thing about restarting in safe mode and checking newly installed hardware as the first blue screen i got.

then it said -

TECH ERROR 0x 000000CE
(0xF7AF8667, 0x00000000, 0xF7AF8667, 0x00000000)

partmgr. sys

I don't know what to do?

I tried the recover/repair option on the windows disc and I get a screen that says
MIcrosoft Windows XP Recovery Console.

Recovery COnsole provides system repair and recovery functionality.
Type EXIT to leave console and restart.

C:\>

and then nothing happens.....
