Unhappy Cannot start system restore. & BSOD! =(
After 2 days straight of trying to get my laptop back up and working (I had the "syetem cant start because win/sys32/config is missing" error) I have managed to finally be able to boot into safe mode, as I would get the BSOD and error message stop: 0x0000007e (0xc0000005, 0xba9c8756, 0xbaccf42c, 0xbaccf128) if I tried to boot into windows normally. I'm not entirely sure but I think the last program I installed was Ultramon, which might have messed around with my drivers... and just before that I think I installed Omega drivers (I had ATI)

So I thought I will just run system restore, and hopefully all should work out OK, but when I tried that, I get System restore cannot protect your computer, please restart.... blah blah, I checked in services.msc if the service has started, and it hadn't, so obviously I try to start it and I get the error the system restore initialization process failed Error 2: the system cannot find the file specified. I have no idea what file is missing, Ive never had this error before and thats all it says.

I have checked my system volume folder where the restore info is kept and it seems like the restore points are still there...

Please help me with either of these errors, I looked on the internet for the stop message and couldn't find anybody at all with the same message, so I really have no idea what to do.

Any other info you need just ask, my specs are:

Thanks for your quick reply elvandil, I checked the link, but I didnt have the same problems as any of the 0x000007e errors on that page. I can still only boot in safe mode.

I just re-installed system restore, during safe mode from win/inf/sr.inf, and now get the error message error 5: access is denied while trying to start the system restore service. So I thought maybe I have to change the file permissions... I changed the whole of the c:\WINDOWS dir but I still get the error, any ideas?

EDIT: Also when I try using sfc /scannow I only have MSDOS flash up and dissapear again, is that normal?

Do a repair install, which is not a full clean reinstall.

I've lost my original XP disk, so just downloaded XP and need to slipstream all my drivers from the other disk I have. I'm not sure what type of repair disk I need, I heard that OEM's usually dont support repair installs?

This is really pissing me off, I never get a "press R to repair" option, all the disk shows is setup windows on current partition, create partition in unpartitioned space, and delete partition... whats going on? I've tried an original HP OEM cd, retail CD and SP2, SP3, Ive tried slipstreaming and without (without I get BSOD because I need the SATA drivers)

Anyone else have any ideas?

Alright, I've decided to make a new partition and try to install windows there, hopefully it will help me recover the files I need then I can format the whole drive and do a clean install, does anyone have any good tips/suggestions for the best way to do this?
