Windows Validation help
Hi, there. I have a question for y'all (And I apologize if I accidentally am going against the rules with this one- I'm not exactly sure)-

I have a refurbished PC that I got as a graduation present a little over a year ago, and it came with Windows XP already installed. Now, the refurbisher who provided the computer is well known, and we got the computer through a program at Boeing. It wasn't having any problems last night, but when I logged on today, it's giving me a message that's saying that my copy of Windows may be counterfeit. I've never had any problems with it before this, and was wondering if anyone had any ideas as to what I can do to rectify this problem.

I'm not financially able to purchase a copy of Windows at the moment, and don't want to lose my files that I've got saved. Any and all practical suggestions are much welcomed.

When you do Windows Updates, sometimes there is a newer version of the Genuine Microsoft Windows Validation Tool..... when you have a refurbished or retired or off-lease business type computer, very often the Volume License key has been "pulled" that is, retired by Microsoft because it has been "leaked" and misused.....the actual reason could vary, that is the usual.

The newer version of the Validation tool finds the Product Key is invalid....after a long time, like you said you used it for about a year.

I have also read that this tool can make mistakes somehow....

A:It is possible for users to pass WGA validation once, and then fail later as a result of non-genuine software. Microsoft frequently discovers new keys that are being counterfeited and adds them to the WGA service. After new keys are added to the WGA service, a validation result could change.

You might be able to ask Microsoft for help directly> might take a while though- here is some help:

Across the more than 530 million validations, only a small percentage of validation failures were found to be in error (also referred to as "false positives"); furthermore, when these errors occur, we work to identify and resolve them quickly. The perception that many validation failures are incorrect may be caused by the fact that a large number of affected users have no idea that their copy of Windows and/or Office is not genuine. It is understandable, then, that the first reaction when validation fails is often disbelief. ((way at the bottom of same page....))

Microsoft can help
Microsoft recognizes that many Windows and/or Office users who fail validation are surprised. They may not fully understand why they have a non-genuine copy of Windows and/or Office or what they can do about it. For that reason, validation failure redirects the user to a customized Web page, designed to help them find more information about the specific cause of the failure and suggestions for resolving the issue, including options for support. Microsoft also offers users a variety of ways to get genuine Windows and/or Office.

If your copy of Windows and/or Office is not genuine, or you suspect it might not be, click the Validate Windows or Validate Office buttons on the top left of this page to validate. If you've already validated before and validation failed, you can validate again to view the specific reason why failure occurred, as well as your options for getting genuine.
