yeah that's what I was trying to do, but every time I made the settings anything other than the 600x800 or whatever it is the screen just went black and had the pop up thing.

Then I logged into vga mode again, and was sitting there just staring at the screen wondering what to do and the computer said something like 'my computer settings were wrong would I like an auto adjustment' so I clicked yes, then restarted in normal mode and it worked!!!!

Everything is really big, because for some reason I can't change the settings from 600x800 without it going crazy again, but at least it sorta works!!! The internet doesn't work and it keeps freezing and half my programs are not working, so I'm pretty sure my computer has had it! but I can at least access my docs, pics, and songs, and save them elsewhere, ready for a new computer whenever I can afford one.

THANK-YOU SO MUCH FOR EVERYONE'S HELP

when you have saved all your data, you can try updating or rolling back your video drivers, another option is system restore to a previous state (before the error started), where it may have had different drivers or settings
as a further option you could try a repair install of windows, if you have an appropriate cd, or even a complete fresh install

test the monitor on another pc or another monitor on your pc

Check the Refresh setting for the monitor, it may still be set too high.
Right click the Desktop, click Properties
Click the Settings tab
Click the Advanced button
Click the Monitor tab
Make sure the Hide modes that this monitor cannot display box is checked.
Then set the Screen refresh rate to 60 Hz

Your 1st post shows the monitor suggested 1280x1024 @ 60 Hz, so 60 Hz should be a good choice. That should let you select a higher resolution without going out of the limits for your monitor.

The attached screen shot shows the settings on one of my systems, with 60 Hz highlighted.

You might want to check the Device Manager to see if other drivers have been affected by whatever messed up the display settings.
Right click My Computer, click Manage
Click Device Manager
Look for any items with a yellow Exclamation Point, yellow Question Mark, or a red X.
