Exclamation Windows will not start! Black screen problem.. Please help!
Hi all!

My other laptop will not start up at all. I have Windows XP. When I turn it on, this message displays on a black screen:

Windows could not start because the following file is missing or currupt:
system32\DRIVERS\isapnp.sys

You can attempt to repair this file by starting Windows Setup using the original Setup CD-ROM.
Select 'r' at the first screen to start repair.

And nothing continues from there. I don't know what to. Help would be greatly appreciated.

I don't think I have that cd anymore. I'll have to ask my sister when she comes back. What should I do if I don't have it?

You will need one so you may have to buy one if you do not have it:

if you do not have a bootable windows disk you can go to site like bootdisk.com and download an iso of a bootdisk then burn to cd, these site have full instructions for downloading and burning, these are often called a PE disk

you then need to copy the file from the error you got to the c:\windows\system32\drivers folder

alternatively you can try to start in safe mode, then in a cmd window run sfc /scannow to repair the system files

And how do you replace a missing file in sfc without a Windows disk?

Well, in fact, if you can boot to safe mode, it might be a better idea to just run system restore. Anyway, if you can boot to safe mode, there are many more options to try.

Yeah, the only way that's going to happen is if you have the i386 folder on your disk.

as the op seemed unsure if he had a disk i thought to at least make the suggestion
and a report back as to whether he could actually go into safemode would have also have merit
