Unhappy Boot up prblm - black logon screen
my pc's OS is windows xp....and after a virus attack my pc wont boot up anymore. after the windows xp logo, the screen stays black but i can still see the cursor. the logon screen never comes. i'v tried the following things-

1. using another hard disk, i cleaned the virus- didn't work
2. safe mode doesnt work.
3. in the repair console, used 'fixboot' command- didn't work
4. tried 'fixmbr' command - it said my master boot record is invalid and fixed it, but pc still doesn't start.
5. checked hard disk 4 error - no help.
6. tried to reinstall windows (without formatting C drive) - it didnt work either.

only option left is fully format my hard drive (redo the partition)... which i dont prefer.. coz im unable to back up my imp files from My Documents. not sure why. something to do with NTFS folder sharing security i guess.

i need HELP plz. does anyone have any other ideas??

you can try to replace your registry to see if corruption has occurred, see instructions here http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307545

well if you have access to another computer that has a cd burner and internet access and have a external hard drive or flash drive or something of the sort you can save the files before you format. go to ubuntu.com and download ubuntu. Ubuntu is a operating system based on Linux. Burn the image file you just downloaded onto a cd. Start the computer with the problems with that burned cd in the cd drive and boot from the cd. when the first menu comes up you should be able to boot straight from the cd without making any changes to your system. Boot that way. Once booted up you can start up the ext hard drive , flash drive or dropbox (dropbox can be downloaded for Linux. It will be easier with a lot of files). Through ubuntu you can access your windows hard drive and save any files you need to on another drive. Once you are done saving your files you can shut down the computer take out the ubuntu cd insert your windows cd and do a fresh install. I hope this helps
