Freezes after last lot of patches
Since I installed the last set of Microsoft patches, my computer has been plagued with freezes. I have run Windoctor and Discdoctor. Uninstalled the patches and reinstalled them. Defragmented the disk, run speed disc, but to no avail. Windoctor says all is well, but it is not! Please help. Is it a bad patch from Microsoft?

Hi there naturist1, and welcome to TSG.

When you uninstalled the patches, was the computer running properly?

One test you might want to run is to install the updates one at a time. Go to the Windows Update site (http://update.microsoft.com/microsof....aspx?ln=en-us), go through the prompts, and when you select which updates to install, just do them one at a time and restart.

It will be a long process, but depending on how soon after the update the freezes start, you can then pinpoint the trouble update, and whether it is actually necessary.

Thanks for your response, I kept it short as I expected a freeze!

Fair enough, I suppose. Considering your computer's state, probably getting more than two sentences is a technological triumph .

About how soon after restarting your computer does the freezes start?

Yeah, I think uninstalling the latest updates, and then reinstalling them one at a time, might be the way to go. Like I said, it will be a laborious task, but if you can single out the troubled update, find out what it is supposed to do or be, and perhaps even find a solution to this problem, then it would be worth it.

I did uninstall all of the 9th September updates and was left with the problem still. Had it been OK, I would have stopped the updates, and taken my chances.

Interesting. Then the problem may not necessarily be with those patches...

If your computer lets you, go into the Event Viewer (Start > Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Event Viewer), and look in the Application and System logs for any warning (yellow triangle with black exclamation mark) or error (red circle with white cross) entries at around the time of the crashes. Double-click on one, and click the Copy button (indicated by the two pages), and post some examples into your next post.

Good luck.

On the internet Pinnaclesys looks bad. How come Spybot and Norton Antivirus have not picked it up?

Pinnacle Systems is mostly involved in video editing/movie software and TV tuner cards. If you have any of these, then they are probably required.

Neither of them seems to be the cause of your freezing issue. This is a pretty strange problem.

What are you typically doing when these freezes occur?

XP Freezes
There is absolutely no pattern whatever. On several occasions it has booted up frozen. Sometimes it dies when unattended. It does not like typing! That makes messges and emails tedious. I have Pinnacle Studio 9 film editing suite. So that probably is the source of the message. I use google a lot, but uninstalled Chrome just in case.
