Windows Explorer is Slow to Load
I frequently use Win+E to launch Windows Explorer. This used to take just a few (< 10) seconds to load. I have noticed that recently this takes upwards of a minute to load, sometimes closer to 2-3 minutes. This is killing my productivity.

Symptoms:
  • After pressing Win+E, I can continue to use any open windows/applications and can use Alt+Tab to switch between them.
  • My taskbar does not respond until the Windows Explorer finally loads. I have also noticed that even if I switch desktops, using virtual desktop application Dexpot, the frozen taskbar remains in the new desktop.
  • Sometimes only the first Windows Explorer that I open takes this long and subsequent ones take the normal amount of time. This doesn't always happen, though, and sometimes every Windows Explorer I try to open takes just as long.

Attempted Fixes:
  • I had two networked drives mapped and tried removing them as this is a common recommendation for slow Windows Explorer loads. This seems to have made the problem worse, if anything.
  • I disabled my antivirus program (Kaspersky 6.0) and the problem persists.

Windows explorer loads hardware and networking as well as the file table for all drives connected, so it could be literally anything to do with any of these, hard to track down.

Most of the time I find that it is hardware related, usually a dying cd/dvd drive, but not always.

As an experiment go to services and stop the following services.

Computer browser
Workstation
Server

then try WE again, if it opens normally, then you know it is network related.

Sometimes disabling AV will not stop the issue if it is truly related to the AV, sometimes you have to completely uninstall it.

It could also be malware related.

Mumbodog, thanks for the suggestions. This is my work PC and I can't easily bring it down during the day, so as soon as I get a chance I will disable those services and give it a restart.

The most annoying thing about this issue is that sometimes it happens and sometimes it doesn't. For example, earlier today it was happening only for the first WE instance I opened and was then fast for subsequent instances I opened right after. A few hours later, it was happening for all instances, not just the first one. And right now, it's working completely fine with no delay.

I don't think it's malware-related because I run CCleaner and my Kaspersky virus scan pretty frequently (at least once a week) and they haven't found anything. I've never used HijackThis, but noticed that several posts on this forum include a log from a HijackThis run. Would that be helpful at all?

Please click here to download and install the HijackThis installer.

Run it and select Do a system scan and save a logfile.

The log will be saved in Notepad. Copy and paste the log in your next post.

Do not fix anything

Yes, I made that edit. I made a few others but I'm assuming that's the only one you're seeing because that's the only one with a public IP.

I would try to narrow it down to a culprit by running a Clean Boot.
