Error .\setup.exe is not a valid Win32 application
I have been trying to install a new disk of Office 2003 Prof onto a new Lenovo T400s Win XP Pro laptop and I can't get the cd rom to read the disk consistently.

When I do get the disk to "run" it asks for the product key. After entering that eventually get an error:
D:\autorun.vbs
Line 12
Char 1
Error .\setup.exe is not a valid Win 32 application
Code 800700Cl
Source WshShell.EXEC

I received a replacement disk and I haven't been able to get that one to run either. When I try to open the first disk, it stops responding. I haven't been able to open the second one at all.

Is there a way to get the device to read new (yet older version) of software. I don't like Office 2007, which is pre-installed though I haven't activated it.

Thanks!

Typically this means either your disc is either damaged or your cdrom drive cannot read the disc properly because of an incompatibility with the burnt media.

I would first examine the disc to make sure there are no scratches or damage.

Otherwise you try the disc in another computer to see if the disc is read correctly, this would confirm that it is your drive that has problems reading the disc. The next step if this was the case would be trying to update the firmware for your disc drive because manufactures usually fix incompatibilities with disc media in each release.

Please follow the instructions carefully because incorrectly flashing the firmware of a disc drive may cause the drive to be permanently damaged.

And you may just have a bad CD/DVD ROM drive.

I have a feeling that it's a compatibility issue.

I spoke with Lenovo and they showed me how to go to an automated program that would go through the new computer and determine what updated firmware is needed but it only brought up one thing and it wasn't related to the DVD rewrite drive.

I am able to boot the discs on my old Thinkpad R31, however, not on my T60 or the new T400s machine.

What's interesting is that I can put in an old Office 2000 CD in the T400s and it boots it up for installing, yet won't budge with the 2003.

I contacted the seller and have told him that I'll have to return them since I haven't been able to open them.

If you know of any "back door" ways to open a disc, I'm all ears. I'm open to more suggestions. I really don't want to have to use Office 2007. I'd rather use my Office 2000 if I have to.

Thanks!

if you have a usb stick you could copy the files using your old laptop cd drive to the usb stick and then install from there instead on the new laptop.

I actually tried to copy the files using my IBM R31 onto an eBook but it didn't work. It kept giving error messages about redundant...circular.... something. So I stopped the process.

I'll try to load onto a USB drive and see if that works.

Thanks again!
