My computer doesn't respond!
Hi there,

After I logged in to Window XP page, the computer works fine for the first minute, but it freezes after one minute, the mouse and the keyboard are working fine. But the computer would just freeze and doesn't react and doesn't do anything, it doesn't even turn off when I press the turn off, I have to manually unplug the power.

Does anybody know why and help me to fix this?? One minute working time doesn't give me enough time to do anything.

Thanks a lot,
Mini

Can you boot in Safe Mode or Safe Mode with Networking?

Let me know if your computer still freezes after 1 minute in Safe Mode or if all is well.

If after several attempts you are unable to get into Windows XP Safe Mode as the computer is booting into Windows, turn off your computer. When the computer is turned on the next time Windows should notice that the computer did not successfully boot and give you the Safe Mode screen.

I tried again and then again, it didn't give me the Safe Mode screen. It just took me directly to the Window log in page. Anything else I could try?

Try using the System Configuration Tool Method described here. In your case though, you'll have to do it quickly!

Leave it like that for a while and try a few programs. If all is normal, we'll have to find the possible culprit.

To do so, let's try a Clean Boot. You may have to start the procedure in Safe Mode unless you have the time to do it in Normal Mode.

After following the instructions in the Microsoft link, boot into Normal Mode. If it still doesn't work, go back and uncheck the other half (as per procedure in the link). A lot of times, an antivirus program will be the culprit. Let's hope it will be that easy...

If we can't narrow it down to one or more of your non-Windows applications, we might have to assume that your computer is infected.

If possible, I would like you to post a HijackThis log.

Please click here to download and install the HijackThis installer.

Run it and select Do a system scan and save a logfile.

The log will be saved in Notepad. Copy and paste the log in your next post.

Do not fix anything

If you cannot do this in time in Normal Mode before the computer freezes, use the attached HijackThis installer here and run it in Normal Mode. It only takes a few seconds to run the program and to copy the log.

I will have to call it a night, it's getting late. Let me know how it goes, perhaps tomorrow and don't hesitate to ask questions.
