help with dell appreciated..
Hi.all..Just bought my grandson a Dell ( DPH).GX280+ 15" monitor from a co. This a reconditioned unit(suppose)?CPU fan sounds akin to a euro fighter on take off,but the main problem is that the on screen message on the monitor is "power save- press any key or move the mouse "Problem is the usb ports are not supplying power to mice or keyboards .(Tried a few) The monitor is ok.as tried it on this comp.Anybody any ideas or is it just a duff buy? Thanking you for your help....addboat..Sorry pc.running XP pro.

Check the motherboard for bulging capacitors, if they are bulging, then yes it a bad purchase.

Thankyou for your prompt reply.Only got it today(2nd hand) for my grandson. He's nine, and seems to have lost the idea of patience..Will have another go tomorrow. It's just been "one of those days" Checked capacitators with magnifiying glass(eyesight not too hot)All seem okay, but no expert, but no leaks or blown tops.Any other ideas would be most welcome.Thanking you again ...addboat

If the tops of the capacitors are domed shaped and not perfectly flat, they are bad, regardless of color or leakage. That model was very prone to this, they did however ship new motherboards (upon request) to owners with this issue, regardless of warranty status (this is no longer being honored), so it is possible yours did get a new motherboard, but the symptoms you describe are classic of the capacitor issue on that model of Dell.
