Wont boot completely or shut down
Hi everyone. I have a fairly major problem and would appreciate any help you can offer.

So here is what happened:
I went to plug a usb memory card reader into my front panel usb slot. The small circuit board containing the 2 usb slots and the headphone/mic jacks fell inside the computer and hit the side of the case. the computer immediately shut down.

Since then the computer will not completely boot and freezes when shutting down. basically all applications will not run, and the ability to navagate folders or 'my computer' is iffy.

I downloaded a memory test program that scanned my memory upon reboot from microsoft. I ran the advanced scan for hours and found no errors. I phoned the local computer shop and they told me the motherboard was fried. I replaced the mobo yesterday but this has not solved my problem.

So my theory is that eather the ram is bad and the scan missed it, the processor is pooched, or windows is now corrupt.

I am running windows xp home edition. I just ran memtest86 and it found no errors.

Any help you folks can offer would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance!

Have you run CHKDISK /F against your drive(s) as corruption would likely have occurred when it shut down.
I usually find that disk errors are the most likely cause of these symptoms.
I would actually be tempted to use CHKDSK /R in this case as there could well have been a head crash.

Some new info

I ran chkdsk /p from windows repair console and got a message saying "found one or more errors on the volume"

I ran chkdsk /r and it froze at 50% (edit: didn't freeeze! Just running really really really slow)

This is leading me to believe that windows in corrupt.

Any thoughts?

Give the /R one a bit more time.
It can take quite a while in one spot if it finds an error.

so chkdsk /r ran for hours and completed. I then re-ran chkdsk /p and it did not find any errors. i restarted windows to again find the same problems. another restart and chkdsk /p found an error again.

Is the drive toast or do i need to reinstall windows or is it something else?

My guess is that you'll have to do a repair install of Windows.
You could download the disk manufacturer's drive utilities to check the drive itself for errors.
