Hello,
I have an older computer that is having problems with slow startup and on any website it may give a message across the top blue bar of "Not Responding". Then it stalls for awhile. For now i have it in selective startup. This helps it alot. I know I need more memory installed. It only has 256 MB DDR-SD RAM, with 80GB HD

First off, let's try and deal with your slow startup and working speeds.

Try and see if there are any programs you can remove from the Start Up list, as this is one of the worst ways of slowing down your computer. When your computer turns on, it instantly wants to start loading a number of applications at once while in its booting process. To do this go to Start, All Programs, Look for Startup and remove appropriate applications.

Hold down the Windows Key and R. Type the following and press Enter: appwiz.cpl. Go thorugh the list and remove and software that you very rarely use or you don't need or use any longer, and you know they are not used by other applications. It's best you leave applications such as Adobe Acrobat Reader, Java and QuickTime installed (if already installed). Don't remove anything that you do not know or that you continue to use.

Try deleting files which you no longer need or try a Disk Defragmentation. However, please be careful and do not delete anything or change any settings that you do not know about.

There are 3 main reasons why your Compaq Presario SR1503WM desktop is running like a snail.

It's running on a measly 256 MB of RAM.

It's got a massive startup load.

There are too many security-related and utility programs bogging it down.

That desktop currently has a single 256 MB module installed and has a second empty slot.

I highly suggest that you install 2 - 512 MB modules or 2 - 1024 MB modules and get the RAM amount up to 1024 MB or 2048 MB.

You'll see a very noticable improvement in speed and performance.
