Exclamation Solved: DirectX problem!
I recently corrupted my DirectX Sound files. I'm not sure how to fix this.
-My media players will not play any audio, but my games and other programs will. I checked all hardware and everything is fine, so I know it is the DirectX. I also performed a diagnostics check and received an error.- To try to fix the problem I have installed Windows 2000 Service Pack 4, other media players, uninstalled media players, associated multiple formats, installed all possible codecs, and checked my system with diagnostics programs. Nothing worked.
- The computer I am using is a Dell Optiplex GX 110 (yes, old, I know). And it does not have the internet, so I cannot use driver detectives.
--Please, can someone find a solution for me? Any suggestions will help.

I inherited a Dell OptiPlex GV110 a few months ago. I increased the RAM to its maximum supported amount of 512 MB and installed a larger 30 GB hard drive and did a clean install of Windows XP SP3. It's something that you might think about.

If you suspect a DirectX problem, you might try installing the August 2009 release of DirectX 9.0C.

If you have more than one codec pack installed, this can cause problems.

Have you reinstalled directX ?

Fixed it!!! Thank you, Flavalee. Your insight led me to my problem. The sound card wasn't running the DirectX because it needed an update.
