Windows XP Explorer not running properly. Help?
So, I go away for a while and the parents managed to mess the computer up. So, here goes nothing...

My dad decided to buy Kaspersky 7.0 and install it himself. It asked him to uninstall our previous anti-virus software (McAffee) which he did (through Kaspersky) It asked him to restart Windows, which he did, and 'bam', the problems started

I've been working at it for the best part of a day. Its not Kaspersky as far as I can gather because its not installed. I believe its Explorer being an arse.

Heres whats going on:
-Drives wont read (cant read any disks including music)
-Cant run any EXEs (just flashes up for a split second then goes off)
-Internet Explorer wont run (same)
-System restore wont run (getting 'System Restore is unable to protect your computer. Please restart and try again')

I've tried safe mode to run system restore and still get the same. Even run Safe mode with CMD and tried System Restore through it, but still nothing.

Dunno if its significant, but all the menu bars (start bar etc) have all changed from XP blue to a 98 grey.

I get a message at startup also explaining about safe mode, and asking if I want to use Restore option instead....Still doesn't work.

Anyone got any ideas? I'm running out of hair...

Cheers

I've run into similar situations many times, and the easiest and quickest solution has been to do a system restore manually using an Ubuntu Live CD. Here's a link that describes the steps.

Otherwise, without looking at the system, your only other option might be trying a repair installation with your Windows installation CD.

Good luck.
