How to recover deleted grub/boot partition in Windows XP(Dual boot system))
Hi,
It has happened to me twice...I accidentally deleted a partition and later found out that my system is dead....The only way I recover out of that is I reinstall Windows and then install grub again to recover the Linux partition. But I feel the delete partition is a very rapid process just taking seconds and in that I don't think files would be deleted, so I feel potentially I can recover the deleted partitions including the boot partition. But I don't know how to do it. Also now when the boot partition is deleted and the system is not booting up what should be done to recover the system and data?
Thanks in advance,
-pkd

Hi,
If you're trying to recover files etc from a Linux o/s I think you should ask for this to be moved to the Linux forum.
Use the 'Report' button in the bottom right corner of your post above to request a move.

It's not the linux partition or Windows partition....It's the boot partition and also the other Windows drives/partitions I want to recover and I want to do it from Windows as I am not so much familiar with Linux,

You need an XP CD and run that to the Repair option. At the prompt for which system to repair type 1 and hit Enter. Hope no-one put in an Administrator password of if they did, hope you know it. When you finally get to the C:\ prompt type fixmbr and hit Enter. Hit Y to accept the warning about the non-standard boot (Grub) and when the prompt comes back with a success message, type fixboot and hit Enter again. Typing Y for yes and exit to get you out and automatically restart - hopefully to a system that can boot without the CD.

Hi Saga Lout
The procedure seems to make sense. I will try it out when I will again reinstall OS on another machine...But one more doubt...Will that method recover the accidentally deleted partition by using Windows disk management tool and show me back the deleted partition disk?

Probably not. For that, download and burn a Hirens BootCD which includes Partition Magic, Ranish and other useful tools. It also has MiniXP which will enable you to rescue your files in case everything goes toes up.
