Exclamation system startup.exe error
when i start my computer i get an error message saying that it cannot find a certain hive file.some systemroot/extensions etc... it all disappears before i ca read it. we just had a power surge. it was on a protecter but it didn't protect it very well. anyway i am runing xp x64. i start it up, loads mem test etc and i press f1 like normal. then it shows the windows xp screen with the progress bar then i get a blue screen with that error message and then it restarts. please help. how do i get my stuff back. thanks so much in advance.

Try starting it in safe mode. While the computer is booting, immediately start gently tapping the F8 key. This should bring up a window with safe mode in the corners. Use the arrow keys to move up to 'last known good configuration" Click on enter and let the computer do its thing.
post back and let us know how it does.

ok i jst tried both safe mode, ummm, last known config and safe with networking. i still get the same screen. systemroot/system32/config/something. i saw a little more of it. it is a custom build and i have a 500gb hd and a 1tb hd. windows is on the 500gb. if i just unplug that drive and install windows fresh on the other drive. will i then be able to get all of the programs and files off of the other drive after. like change the boot order to put the 1tb first and 500gb last.then open up the 500gb "in" windows from my computer or some other directory and copy all of my old stuff from it. then i can reformat that drive. would that work?
