lengthy boot time
When I open Windows XP, the Windows Icon page comes up with a traveling bar on the bottom of the screen. This bar runs forty or fifty times before the computer actually brings up my desk screen. This seems to be an inordinate amount of time. Any suggestions?

Warren:

Go here and click the green icon to download HijackThis 2.0.2.

Close all open windows, then install it in its default location: C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis.

Run a scan with it - which will take 30 seconds or less.

Save the resulting log in Notepad.

Return here, then copy-and-paste the entire log here.

I am running Windows XP home edition on a Dell Dimension 3000 desktop.

How do I check for speed and type of processor and amount of RAM?

Cheers,

If that's a Dell, it'll have a "service tag number" on the case. Advise what it is.

Right-click MY COMPUTER, then click Properties. The processor and RAM information will be in the General tab.

Yikes! Talk about massive over-kill with toolbars!

-----------------------------------------------------------------

You have a lot of unneeded and useless crap in that computer.

Open HijackThis.

Click on the "Open The Misc Tools Section" button.

Click on the "Open Uninstall Manager" button.

Click the "Save List" button.

Save the "uninstall_list.txt" file somewhere. It'll then open in Notepad.

Return here to your thread, then copy-and-paste the entire file here.

Actually, I had the service tag stuck on a bulletin board, but hadn't referred to it for a long time: 96QSV71.
Pentium (R) 4CPU 2.80 GHz 2.79GHz 512 RAM

Cheers,

That service tag number is listed on the Dell site to a Dell OptiPlex GX280 and not to a Dell Dimension 3000.

That is strange because I referred to a page copied from the original owner's manual indicating Dimension 3000. The page was copied in January 2005 and perhaps Dell has changed its nomenclature since?
In any event, I appreciate your help here and look forward to hearing from you later. Incidentally, is that your granddaughter in the pix and am wondering how old she is. My son and his nine month old boy just visited with us this past weekend and they sure are adorable at that age--even more so when they are not crying!

Cheers,

Warren

I'm going to keep you busy for awhile.

These are the programs(so far) that I recommend you uninstall. Some of them aren't needed at all, and others do a poor job that I'll be giving you replacements for.

If you can find any of them in the Add Or Remove Programs list, or if you disagree with me on uninstalling any of them, let me know.

Acrobat.com

Adobe AIR

Apple Software Update

Desktop Doctor

Logitech Desktop Messenger

Microsoft Antimalware

Microsoft Search Enhancement Pack

Microsoft Security Essentials

NTREGOPT

PC Doctor Pro

Shockwave

Spybot - Search & Destroy

Viewpoint Media Player

Windows Live OneCare

If you're prompted to restart during the uninstall of any of them, do so.

Once you're all done, restart again.

Click the green icon to download AVG Free Edition 9.0.698.

Click the green icon to download SUPERAntiSpyware 4.29.0.1004.

Click the green icon to download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware 1.41.

Just download and save these files for now and don't install them yet.

Look through the list of toolbars that you have in that computer and decide which ones you actually need and use, then advise me.

This will keep me very busy, so I am going to save it for after dinner. There are a few programs I'll need to ask about, but I'll save that for later too. Thanks again.
Cheers,

Warren

When you get a chance, and if it's not too inconvenient to move the computer tower, try to verify the service tag number on it and whether it's a Dell Dimension 3000 or a Dell OptiPlex GX280.

What I'm trying to do is to verify how much RAM it supports and what type RAM module it uses. The 512 MB currently in it isn't enough to run Windows XP properly, let alone all the other crap that it has to run. An increase to 1024 MB, and preferably 2048 MB, would make a noticable difference in performance and speed.

If it's easier for you to do, go to www.crucial.com and load the activeX control to run the on-line scanner and see what results it comes back with.
