Problem with my PC Urgent help needed- Keeps restarting.
(BTW My first post )

I turned my pc on today which runs on Windows XP Pro. Every time the computer starts I get four or five options Safe Mode, Safe mode with Prompt, Last well know configuration, etc (most ppl know what I mean here.)

Every time I click on any of the modes my computer restarts. Just before the pc restarts I see a blue screen quickly flash (i know this is know as the 'blue screen of death'.)

I have put in my XP cd but i cant get it to run so i use recovery not even when I run it from my BIOS Screen.

Please can some one help me I need the computer fixed by tomorrow as I had some important essays on their to print out.

P.S.(Why didn't I use my laptop to do my work.)

On that Safe Mde menu should be "Disable automatic restart on system failure" but if it isn't, restart and tap Function 8 to see the extended menu that contains that entry. Use that one and the blue screen will stand still long enough for the Stop Error Message. Post the bare bones of that back here and someone will help you. The bits we need are the 0x000000?? and any major message, such as IRQ_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL, for example.

Sorry but that doesnt seem to work when i press F8 i just get a menu saying boot from which gives me options such as CD Drive , Floppy Drive Hard Disk etc.

Is there another way or can u explain again how I can access the disable auto start page.

Thanks.

I'm guessing this is a Packard Bell then - all the other makers leave the Function 8 key alone at boottime but they use if for boot options. You need to tap it again after that option has gone by and then you'll see the extended Safe Mode menu.

Normally associated with file system problems so you need that XP CD and this time, tap the Function 8 key as soon as you turn the computer on to change the boot order so it looks for a bootable CD first. Pop the disk in and after the setup gets tot he stage where it offers you the Repair option, hit R for that and at the next prompt, select the system you want to repair and it Enter - usually it's a No. 1.

At the prompt, type chkdsk /r including the space and that will spend some time checking and , hopefully, fixing disk errors. When it completes, type exit, hit Enter and the system restarts.

Let it start up by itself this time to see if it can - i it doesn't, please post back.

The computer doesnt seem to want to boot from the CD no matter how many times I try and boot from the CD it doesnt seem to want to.

Do have any other methods in which I can try to boot from my CD.

Windows CD gives you a very brief moment in which to choose to boot from CD after your own system has been set to do so. Are you sure you aren't missing the prompt "Hit any key to boot from CD."?
