Windows XP slow and freezes
Running Windows XP on an old (P-III) 750mHz with 1GB RAM. It eventually freezes, most notably if I start editing text or word documents. Need help identifying what is causing it to freeze up. Thanks!

I'm surprised that your computer has an Intel Pentium III 750 MHz processor and supports 1024 MB of RAM. Most of them support 384 - 512 MB.

-------------------------------------------------------------

Go to Start - Run - MSCONFIG - OK - Startup(tab). How many entries have a checkmark?

Press Ctrl-Alt-Delete at the same time to open Windows Task Manager, then click Processes(tab). What is the number of running processes?

--------------------------------------------------------------

Do you know how to post a HijackThis log here?

Get rid of MemTurbo. All those booster/optimizer programs are useless.

Get rid of HP Smart Web Printing, unless you actually use it. It's not needed and can be problematic.

---------------------------------------------------------------

It appears that you've previously edited the startup list in Start - Run - MSCONFIG - OK - Startup(tab) and are familiar with it. You can go back and uncheck the ones that I've highlighted in your log in bold type.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SunJavaUpdateSched] "C:\Program Files\Java\jre6\bin\jusched.exe"

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ISUSPM Startup] C:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\INSTAL~1\UPDATE~1\ISUSPM.exe -startup

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ISUSScheduler] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\InstallShield\UpdateService\issch.exe" -start

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [mcagent_exe] "C:\Program Files\McAfee.com\Agent\mcagent.exe" /runkey

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ddoctorv2] "C:\Program Files\Comcast\Desktop Doctor\bin\sprtcmd.exe" /P ddoctorv2

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [HP Software Update] C:\Program Files\HP\HP Software Update\HPWuSchd2.exe

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [MSMSGS] "C:\Program Files\Messenger\msmsgs.exe" /background

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [ctfmon.exe] C:\WINDOWS\system32\ctfmon.exe

O4 - Startup: MemTurbo.lnk = C:\Program Files\Silicon Prairie Software\MemTurbo\MemTurbo.exe

O4 - Global Startup: Adobe Reader Speed Launch.lnk = C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 7.0\Reader\reader_sl.exe

O4 - Global Startup: HP Digital Imaging Monitor.lnk = C:\Program Files\HP\Digital Imaging\bin\hpqtra08.exe

O4 - Global Startup: Microsoft Office.lnk = C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\OSA9.EXE

After you apply the change and restart, the "System Configuration Utility" window will appear. Make sure to put a checkmark in it before you click OK.

---------------------------------------------------------------

After you've done the above and have restarted, post a new HijackThis log here.

Thanks flavallee. I haven't edited the startup list much, but saw it mentioned in some of the other postings.

Wasn't sure about the Memturbo - hoped it would help with the performance. Oh well.

Unless you really need the reminder feature of CreataCard Plus to run, you can uncheck that startup entry too.

----------------------------------------------------------------

Go into Start - Run - SERVICES.MSC - OK, then expand the services window, then double-click on Java Quick Starter, then change "Startup Type" from Automatic to Manual, then click Apply - OK.

Whenever you install or update Sun Java Runtime Environment, it'll set that service entry to Automatic and will put a checkmark in the jusched.exe startup entry, so you have to go back and uncheck the one entry and change the other entry to Manual.

----------------------------------------------------------------

Go into the Device Manager and expand the IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers heading, then double-click on Primary IDE Channel and Secondary IDE Channel, then go into Advanced Settings(tab) and make sure the transfer mode is on DMA and not on PIO.

---------------------------------------------------------------

Ok. Got rid of CreataCard. Took care of the Java quick start. Made sure the IDE is set to DMA. Running a little better, but sometimes drags (just a while ago I was typing and watching the letters appear several seconds later) and freezes out of the blue. Any suggestions? Thanks!

Go into these 2 temp folders:

C:\WINDOWS\Temp

C:\Documents And Settings\(Username)\Local Settings\Temp

and delete everything from inside those 2 temp folders.

It's all junk and it's a good place for infectious files to hide.

Empty the Recycle Bin afterwards and then restart your computer.

Running into at least one file, called "3488", in a subfolder called "hsperfdata_Sue" that denies me access to delete it, even though I removed the Read-only protection.

One or more files inside those 2 Temp folders will sometimes refuse to delete. Just leave them alone and delete everything else.
