Solved: computer "revving up"
A couple of days ago my computer sounded like it was "revving up" for about 15 seconds. Did it twice. I scanned for viruses and the programs I use found an infection and two trojans. I removed them and everything was quiet for a day then it made the same noise for just a few seconds. This morning it did it again. Could this be an indication that a fan should be replaced?

If not - what? Thanks for any suggestions.

It's a possibility, or then again, it may need vacuuming to clear dust away. It's also possible that it's a smart fan that steps up a gear to take account of increased activity to maintain a steady temperature. Could a scan have been running in the background when you heard that noise?

There weren't any scans running at the time. The computer was thoroughly cleaned about six months ago so maybe it needs it again. It's on the floor directly under an open window and a few feet from a heating/ac duct. I laid a very loose, single piece of cheesecloth over the side to protect the fan from dust.

Another thought, there was a CD in the player and someone suggested if this was the case, perhaps the drive was gearing up.

This seems to have happened about the same time the monitor became very sluggish in coming up after a few hours of sleep.
