Unhappy Computer freezes up----help me
yea, i have this problem
at random moments, my computer freezes
everything stops, mouse stops moving, music freezes.

some specs:
Windows XP professional 5.1
AMD athlon X2 2.2 ghz processor
2 gig RAM
2 230 gig harddiscs
FOXCONN RS690M2MA
processor fan is spinning

well, i think those are the only specs that matter here.

the harddiscs were recently installed, so they might be doing it
but i dont know where my old 70 gig is, it was taken out by some guy
coming to repair it.

i want to install a new, quite expensive videocard, but first i wanna rid my pc of all
problems, so.
im not comfortable reformatting my pc, btw

its really annoying, so please help.

How often is this happening? Does it matter how long the system has been up? Is the problem very recent?

Has chkdsk been run on the drive? >>

Any "Disk" related errors in the Event Viewer (run: eventvwr.msc) System Log?

You really need to identify a pattern. I would be looking at display driver related issues -- and possibly overheating.

IF the problem is frequent enough, you can try "Clean Boot" troubleshooting >>

Run msconfig and select the "Services" tab. Check "Hide Microsoft Services" and then disable the rest. Also uncheck "load startup items" on the general page.

Now restart and test the issue at hand

If no problems, run msconfig and recheck half the disabled items on the Services tab. Test again. If the problem recurs, UNcheck half the items you just checked to narrow down the culprit.

If the problem didn't occur, check the other half, so all the Services are enabled -- proceed to do this on the startup tab as well.

Get the idea? You want to isolate the problem to a specific startup if possible.

Note: if you already have items unchecked under msconfig > startups and are in “selective” startup mode – you should note what these are before beginning. They will need to be de-selected again.

Yes it could be.

You want to run chkdsk in "fix" mode -- typically it will have to reboot to run.

Once it has completed and rebooted the log can be found in the Event Viewer > applications log > Winlogon entry.

You can double click that to read the description and the copy icon used to copy it to the clipboard for pasting.

You might want to take the precaution of backing up any personal files before running it again in "fix" mode.

Great, keep those fingers crossed.

Still might be a heat issue though if related to up time or stress conditions.
