Constant CRC errors on large RAR files
Hello all

This has started to happen recently.

Every time I download a large RAR (more than 700 MB), it won't extract properly, and will say there's been a CRC error of sorts. What does that mean?

This has been happening to every large file I download, from multiple sources! I really hope somebody can help me.

Thanks in advance.

You might try using a newer version of WinRar

Or try another decompression tool

Yeah, my WinRAR is up do date, but I also tried extracting with 7zip. Same thing.

So this is a software issue?

From what I have read, it can be many things, software, memory, bug during compression or decompression.

Some say ignore the error and continue extraction.

CRC (Cyclic Redundancy Check) are either a result of the file being corrupted or bad RAM.

You can check your RAM using Memtest. Download the ISO Image and burn it to a CD/DVD. Then, boot from it and follow the on screen instuctions.

Thanks for the reply, but I still don't understand.

What do I do with the RAM test data? Will it tell me what is wrong? Or should I post it here? Is there a way to fix it, or should I prepare to buy a new one?

Memtest Technical Information

If your RAM is bad, you'll need to replace it.

Isn't there another test I can do now? This Memtest will surely take the whole day. I'm thinking maybe running it overnight.

The other possibility I can think of, is that your file may be corrupt. But, if they all do the same thing, it's unlikely. Memtest is the only test I can think of for now.
