Blue screen on start up: fltmgr.sys
Hello,

I recently have had a couple errors on my custom PC that is about five years old...

I first had a "missing or corrupt ntfs.sys" error on start up. For this I did CHKDSK and Windows Repair install from the Windows XP disc, neither solution working. After some google searches I found that removing one stick of RAM at a time actually solved that issue.

Now I can make it to the Windows XP logo start up screen when I get the blue screen of death which reads:

0x0000007E (0xc0000005, 0xBAF462B2, 0xf78ae48c, 0xf78ae18c)
FLTMGR.SYS - Address BAF462B2 Base at BAF2E000, DateStamp 480251da

When I try to boot up in safe mood, I make it into windows but before any icons or start menu is displayed I get a dialouge box saying

"Windows XP Setup cannot run under safe mode. Setup will restart now."

Safe Mode with command line, for some reason, brings me to the same exact place.

Booting to the Windows XP CD only works every once in a while...

Should I try another repair install? There is no past point to use System Restore with.

I am running a custom built PC with an AMD AthalonXP 2500+ CPU and am running Windows XP SP2.

Just did a repair install and left my computer at around 70%. When I came back it was on the same blue screen and I now have the same issue. I assume it finished repair installing and restarted automatically, not solving my problem.

I think you probably have some serious file and disk corruption.

If you can get to the "recovery console" you can try running chkdsk /r

http://commandwindows.com/recovery.htm

If you have an XP install disk with SP1 or later, I'd also recommend creating a boot disk which will at-least allow you to save personal data.

However if you can now boot in Safe Mode, you can try a "clean boot"

CLEAN BOOT TROUBLESHOOTING technique

First, restart in Safe Mode if necessary -- (tap the f8 key promptly on startup and choose the Safe Mode option from the boot menu) or Normal mode

Then:

Run msconfig and select the "Services" tab. Check "Hide Microsoft Services" and then disable the rest. Also uncheck "load startup items" on the general page.

Now restart and test the issue at hand

If no problems, run msconfig and recheck half the disabled items on the Services tab. Test again. If the problem recurs, UNcheck half the items you just checked to narrow down the culprit.

If the problem didn't occur, check the other half, so all the Services are enabled -- proceed to do this on the startup tab as well.

Get the idea? You want to isolate the problem to a specific startup if possible.

Note: if you already have items unchecked under msconfig > startups and are in “selective” startup mode – you should note what these are before beginning. They will need to be de-selected again.

Unfortunately, when I try to boot to safe mode all I see is a dialouge box saying:

"Windows XP Setup cannot run under safe mode. Setup will restart now."

I can't open task manager or anything, all I can do is click Okay and watch the computer restart. I do I have a Windows XP install disc so I will try to create a boot disk with the link your provided and save some data. If that doesn't work I guess I will bring it to a technician and hope to recover some of my data.

Thanks for the response.
