What version of Windows? Version of IE? Have you tried a different browser like Mozilla Firefox?

Try this technique first, and see what happens.

You also mentioned that the system is an "old tower". Do you know processor speed and the amount of RAM in it? And what security software are you running?

Have you tried running IE without the add ons. It should be in Start, all programs, accessories, system tools, Internet explorer (No add ons).

If it is a problem with one of the active x add-ons, which I have found in the past it is. Then this may work.

My thoughts too. Is that tower so old and slow that it can't handle XP without bogging down?

Right-click MY COMPUTER and then click Properties. What's listed for the processor type and speed and the amount of RAM?
