did you re-install from a recover CD with all the drivers?
Are there any yellow ? in device manager at all

make and model of PC - you should be able to get the drivers off the manufacturers website -

Andy:

A hard drive format and fresh install of XP doesn't always install the drivers for all the devices.

That's why it's good to have the device drivers burned off to a CD-R before you start.

In your case, the network adapter driver didn't get installed.

Go into the Device Manager, as etaf advised, and see if any entries have a question mark or exclamation mark.

If there is a Other Devices or Unknown Devices heading, advise what's listed there.
